Winter is Here

thanks enysee
ive always thought all of America got covered up in snow during winter .
my daughter has always wanted to Christmas in the states so we can have a white Christmas.
but its almost dark there all day now , right ?

Yes, it's maybe light for 9-9.5 hours right now, it's bloody AWEFUL, I hate the dark and cold weather

Nope. True for northern Alaska and Canada. In Colorado, on the shortest day of the year, the sun will rise at 7:20 and set at 16:39. There is plenty of snow at the ski resorts. The days are shorter as you move north, longer further south.

Dec 21 we will have a grand total of 7 hours 54 Minutes and 17 seconds of Daylight.
Shortest day of the year.

Above 90 degrees they will be in the dark all day.

Here in Anchorage, we're on the coast and the ocean keep us warm(er) in the winter and cooler in the summer. Just a few hours north it gets chilly during the winter (-40 c or f) but up to +100f or +40c in the summer. Daylight here is 10:00 til 16:30 here but way up north they won't see the sun for several months straight. BTW it gets really cold on the North Slope. I've been there at -76f (-60c) That will hurt just to breathe outside.

Exposed skin will start to freeze in a moment and if the wind is blowing it'll take much less time.

im kinda happier about our winters ,right now mike .

Awww Bluey, You just don't know what you're missing! There's tons of fun stuff to do when it gets cold.

#1 is taking care of Mama! :D

Pic 1 is me sledding down at the cabin.

Pic #2 is chasing the critters off the road in front of the house.

Pic #3 is the dogs taking us out for a walk.

Pic #4 is my favorite winter time hunting quarry! The elusive jackalope. Those damn things are hard to find and harder to shoot! But tastey!! :D

Pic#5 is an unwanted summer visitor to the cabin that had to leave his mark. A small black bear.

#6 is my winter cabin. It's 8 miles from the closest road and miles from anywhere.

Just remember that you can dress up to handle the cold. BUT you can only strip down so far and even then you'll be too hot.

so it doesn't snow in phoenix ?
I thought you guys in America got snow all over the show ...:confused:

Nope. Well mostly. A year or two ago on the north side of town in the foothills of the mountains, there was an accumulation on the ground of about 5mm. Roads hold heat and it never sticks there. Typically when the kids here get a new bike or some other outdoor toy for Christmas, they're outside enjoying it the same day. I play softball (sort of an old man's baseball) year round.

But we pay for it in a big way in the summer months. I'd trade for the cold again. I moved here from the northern Rockies in Idaho and would gladly swap weather. The better tradeoff though would be moving to northern Arizona. You gain about 6000 feet of elevation. There's winter weather there for sure, but it's not like Alaska or Canada. And.....there's lots of elk roaming about. Spring/Summer/Autumn time weather cannot be beat.

Amen on that last statement Mike, not sure if you know just how true that is if you've never spent time in Phoenix in June/July. Always wanted to try out the dogsledding deal. When I lived in Idaho there were some outfits over in Jackson, WY that had dog team tours. Way to touristy, but at least you got the opportunity.

The snowmobiling deal is probably what I miss most in Idaho. Running a sled into deep powder, pretty hard to describe to those who haven't done it.

I will say however our Jackalope's are MUCH bigger than those Alaskan sissy versions!

Enjoy it while it lasts. The storm that we're "enjoying" in Colorado is headed your way. Better dig out your long woolies. Tonight it's supposed to get to -24 C. It's not predicted to get above freezing until next Wednesday and the weather service is predicting that it should stop snowing by Monday. Enjoy. ;-)

We're supposed to touch freezing in the mornings but still make it into the 50's.

I've heard that the Jack's down south are a bit bigger before. I think that the cold just saps so much of their growth out of them here. Takes a bunch of energy to stay warm and might take away from the growth.??

Other than touching down at airports in route to Eastern Europe I really haven't spent much time down in the states. And haven't hunted there since I was 10 or so.

BTW, on the moose pic. Notice the hooves. That's a real swamp donkey! It's been in the bogs so much that the hoofs don't wear any and grow like that.

yep , ive always said that can get warm a whole lot easier than you can get cold , that for sure .

Yes, but what about your summers???
the summers can get real hot here mtgoat ,that's for sure .
but always being at sea where its cooler is a bonus , usuall the hottest months late feb thru to the middle of april we are down the bottom of Tasmania fishing ,get hot as hell there but nothing like it does in the north of Australia

I just thought you put elf shoes on your moose up there. :elch:

Surprised the PETA people don't make you trim their hooves.

LOL, It'd be easier just to shoot them as God intended but Fish and Game Dept regulates.

I hadn't noticed that till you pointed it out. Looks like the hooves of a horse that's foundered.

I'm looking out of my office window. The temperature is 7 F (-22 C), however, it is sunny and the snow and ice are melting. I've lived here many years, but I'm always amazed by this phenomena.

Damn, right now in CO it's around -10 F. Way cold for us this time of year. Oh well. Nothing I can do about it, Thankful I have a house and heat. Still trying to gather my balls in a bunch and finish shoveling the driveway.. Would rather drink some beer and watch a movie.

You must be up in the mountains. Down here, it's +7, practically a heat wave.
