THE KING

In regards to different bullet weights hitting similar POI, I'd say that most rifles in that day, were fired using iron sights alone. I'd bet that if they could keep the same POI, between 3 different loads, inside of a pie plate at 100 meters, they were happy. If they had the same optics as we do today, I'd bet the story would've been much different. Now we think we have to have at least an MOA rifle to hunting anything, including buffalo.

I'll bet your onto something there. The open sight is only going to hold so fine. Given a target the size of a pie plate, you could likely stack everything from 200 to 380 inside without trouble. Going and regulating powder charge and this velocity and recoil to some extent...you'd have it done easily.

Plus no one had chronographs back then. They may have loaded the 270 and 300 gr loads to similar velocities.

Well I was considering more along the lines of being loaded to a similar recoil impulse that would let the lighter bullets strike higher similar to the heavier ones. This thought is based off standing shooting either offhand or a standing rest and not a bench with a seat, a ten ton vice to hold the gun, and 500 pounds of ballast.

I'm bringing this thread back because it's so good!

I'm a fan of medium bores in general and 375 H&H in particular.
One thing not often mentioned is how versatile the 375 H&H is for the reloader.
I know many say just use 300 grain bullets and enjoy - but I have found this cartridge to be fun, accurate and effective with bullets from 235 grain to 300 grain.
I've read a lot about modern 9.3x62 loads that push 250 at 2600+ or 286 at 2400+ but these require careful work up in modern rifles.
On the other hand these are starting loads in the 375 H&H! Additionally, given the right powders, these starting loads are low pressure, lower blast, lower recoil, accurate, easy on brass and devastating on game!

Long live the King!

Don't forget, you can load up to 350 grain bullets 375H&H without a problem. That covers game animals from elk to elephant.

I mentioned your article to my Krieghoff .375 H&H double rifle, who accompanied me on all my African trips and accounted for lion, leopard, eland and greater kudu. She was incensed. The article should be entitled "THE QUEEN"!

I disagree. Why send a woman to do a man's job? :E Shrug:

Seeing pictures of a lovely Westley Richards magazine rifle in another post got me to thinking. If I win the lottery I’m going to commission WR to build me a 2 gun battery. Purely bespoke. High grade wood and all the extras. The calibers are 30-06 and .375 H&H. I can hunt everything in Africa and look awesome doing it!

That would be something! You would look even more awesome if it was 300 H&H and 375 H&H!

I like the way you think! The 300 H&H is my new favorite cartridge. I could argue that it isn’t meaningfully more lethal than an ‘06, but who cares. It’s coolness factor is undeniable.

@TOBY458
Because SHE would probably do a better job to start with.
Why is it a woman can kill a white tail deer with a 257 Roberts but a man needs a 30-06 or bigger. It's because women don't believe the advertising bullshit.

And a .243 or 6.5CR is as good as anything for deer and pg.

And seeing as the 257 Bob is almost identical to the 243 Win, I can't figure out why a strapping fellow such as yourself can't seem to kill anything with a 243. You been reading the hype too? Lol!

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….

I'd like to get some too.

My wife (a biologist, like me) had to have a melanoma removed from her arm last fall.

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
