I read of handspannung in ads on guns.de or other germanic advertisements, but cannot seem to google what is meant by the term. It is obviously touted as an advantage. Can anyone enlighten me?

Handspannung (German) direct translation to English is "manual tension".

Meaning a rifle with a "decoking" lever like the Blaser R8, Kreighoff double and single shot rifles along with the new Sako 100 and several others. It's an incredibly safe way to carry a rifle with a round in the chamber, but there is no tension on the firing pin or firing pin spring until it's cocked.

I've been handspannung my 100+year old Winchester 1886 in 45-70 and 90 year old Model 94 in 30-30 and didn't even know it.

"Spannen" in German, means, among other things, to cock a weapon by compressing the hammer or firing pin spring. "Handspannung" is the act of cocking an action by hand. In the case of the Krieghoff system, once the cocking piece has been moved forward, cocking the action, then after the action has been fired and the chamber reloaded, manual cocking is no longer needed, and the weapon becomes a "Selbstspanner" or self cocker, like most conventional break open weapons.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.
