What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

Can I summarize all of the posts above?

We want long-throated chambers capable of handling heavy-for-caliber bullets at moderate velocities.

In short, almost all the storied cartridges above have the demonstrable evidence of success behind them. Not all upgrades are progress. I don't want anything faster, anything more efficient, and honestly I don't need more accuracy. I need good feed, extraction, a heavy bullet, and a very well constructed projectile.

425 WR - I am having one bulit on a savage action tactical stock - why because I can !

Can I say 6.5 Creedmoor for the new list of calibres to be consigned to the grave ! or will you get the pitchforks out ! Elephant killer I am told !

How's the great grandson liking the 9x57. I heard of a shop in Arizona that has original Kynoch 9x57 ammo verified good if he needs some food for it.
He said he found a costume loader that had some but there around 110 a box
He said he was getting a box. And going to try to get it set up for deer season.
But he is bussey. Finishing his masters, applying for a college pd and forest services and doing drill with the guard.
He said he didn’t really care what job he was taking the first one that gave him a spot.
He does have a few stands set up in the swamp though

Not so much the caliber as the rifle to shoot it. Magnum length action rifle calibers (especially anything for DG) in a commercially produced Left-Handed bolt action rifle.

.338 Ruger Compact Magnum (RCM). Designed for 20” barrels. Ruger ceased chambering their Alaskan and Guide Gun Hawkeye models for them in 2012 along with the .300 RCM. Too bad.

Its certainly not popular with the cool kids anymore.
Yet it is truly the original Daddy Cool !

I hate the .308...somehow I own two and don't have a 30/06, but Rigby Highland Stalker in 30/06 would really be nice in my safe

I seem to be shooting the walking dead! I shoot 308 and 358 Norma Mag, 416 Taylor and 450 Marlin. The only mainstream I have is a 44 Rem Mag.
Yeah, but they ARE performers. Probably would all actually work on the walking dead if your name was Daryl. The 358 Norma never made it but sure should have!

Don’t forget the rationale for legislating straight wall cartridges is to limit maximum range without actually restricting use to shotgun only, so your .30 caliber solution would be tempting legislative fate. If I were writing the law, I would instead require flat/round nose bullets and hunting only from elevated stands, say over 60 inches above the ground. This would make people fire downward 98% of the time, and the poor BC of the mandatory projectiles would still have some effect on maximum range.

A wildcat I have been kicking around in my head for quite some time is the 9.3x74r necked up straight to .416. Imagine my surprise to find out that this is almost identical to the now sadly deceased 400 Purdey. I think it would be a phenomenal cartridge to resurrect for a svelte but formidable double, especially with modern loading.

And it would be legal in a lot more places?

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
