Pretty damn solid choices there! Especially if that 45 colt is in a strong frame like a Freedom Arms. Often overlooked as a bear defense cartridge, but properly loaded in a proper handgun, they are devastating.

It’s landowner deer season here now (and open season on coyote) so at the moment it’s:

.45-70 (Marlin 1895 SBL)
.30-06 (pre-War Model 70 — only when there’s NO chance of rain)
.45 Colt (Ruger stainless Bisley, occasionally Winchester (Miroku) 92)

Today I'll limit myself to what I have in the gun safe.
- 270 Win
- 35 Whelen
- 416 Rigby

Pic of Model 70 please!

So, assuming these choices are only for an African safari, I'd choose:
7mm-08 with 150/160 pills for everything up to impala/blesbok/springbok
338 WM with 250 pills for zebra, kudu, gemsbok, Black and Blue Wildebeest and the like
416 RM with 400 grainers for eland and buff

For everything in NA, my choices would be different.

Today’s choice 30-06, 375 h&h, 470. Last week the 6.5 Swede might have misplaced the 470

Also I saw a pre war M70 30-06 at a gun store last winter for $1050, but I didn’t have it so couldn’t buy it

This is worse than "Who are your favorite 3 grandkids?" I have 12 of those. This is much worse because the number if my rifles is much larger. If I have to chose: 7X64 Breneke, 375 H&H, .470 NE. Don't even ask about my kids.

If it was original and decent shape I would have went out and sold myself to old widow women at the retirement home before I walked away from that! One must get his priorities in line Wyatt!

Were l to pick my personal favorites
:
magnum .375 by Holland and Holland , (preferably built on a Brevex rifle mechanism ( or " action " ) )
7 millimeter Remington magnum
12 bore Astra side by side shot-gun .

Depending on my whims , the bottom two will change ( although a 12 bore must always be present in my list of choices ) , but the .375 bore will always stay at the top of my list of preferences.

Gun case keeps spitting out options :)

CZ Shadow 2 in 9mm
Merkel RX Helix Explorer in 300 win mag
Mauser M12 Max in 9.3x62

After reading the various threads on various cartridge choices I have a choice for today. This is a subjective choice valid only for today as it may change tomorrow. But my three choices for today are 257 Roberts, 338 Win, 404 Jeffery. There are limitations to these cartridges that are addressed by other cartridges, but at the expense of other limitations. These three are picked with the premise that there are no shots over 300 yards and any shots on DG would include a PF with a stopper (if needed). I know this choice leaves out some really good cartridges such as the 270, 7 & 300 mags, 458 and several metrics; so as I said, these three are my choices for today. Ask me tomorrow or the next day and you may get a different answer. In fact, as I think about it, it's more than likely that you would get a different answer, particularly if I go fondle the Biesen 270 or the Donnelly 458.....

I know how you feel mate that's why I had a big cull and only kept my absolute 3 favorites that cover everything I shoot.
22K Hornet
My personal 25/303Epps Newton improved
35 Whelen
Saves time thinking more time shooting.
Cheers mate Bob
