I was thinking today what would you consider the three most classic three rifle battery for Africa from the Golden Era of safaris. I will break it down to high end and more "working man" range.
High end:
Westley Richards bolt action .318 Westley Richards, Holland and Holland in 375 H&H, and a Holland and Holland Royal in 500/465NE or 470NE
"Working man" class:
Lee Enfield in 303 British, W.J. Jeffrey in 404 Jeffrey, and a Army Navy double in 470NE.
What do y'all think?

Okay, let’s play:

BRITISH
.240 Apex Holland & Holland Mauser actioned magazine rifle
.375 Holland & Holland Magnum Pattern 14 Enfield actioned magazine rifle
.600 Nitro Express Holland & Holland Royale sidelock ejector

CONTINENTAL EUROPEAN
6.5x54mm Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1903
9.3x62mm Mauser Type B Sporter
12.7x70mm August Schuler Jumbo

AMERICAN
.22 Hi-Power Savage Model 99
.30-06 Springfield Model 1903A3 Griffin & Howe Sporter
.458 Winchester Magnum Pre ‘64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade

275 Rigby, 404 Jeffery, 450 NE. I have all three

IMO...

7x57 Mauser for most PG
.375 H&H for large PG and light DG (leopard, maybe)
.416 Rigby for fairly long range DG (.470 NE for close up work)

If limited to only one, then, definitely .375 H&H.

My 3 battery lineup.

30-06 in Model 70 Featherweight
404 Jeffery in 1917 Enfield
458 Lott in Model 70 Classic

Not sexy. Not romantic. Effective.

Kinda like me.

.577 Nitro Express - Holland & Holland Royal double rifle

.416 Rigby - Rigby Big Game bolt rifle

.275 Rigby - Rigby Highland Stalker bolt rifle

I have two of the three, and am working on the missing capstone…
These sound like classic choices with a healthy dose of nostalgia for the purists.

I like your choices and my thoughts are the battery should include
-a Plains Game rifle.
-a Medium to Big Bore bolt action
-a Big Bore double rifle.

Some of which I have no experience with but I am fascinated by DG and I like classic rifles and modern sporting rifles.

I would prefer Timber stocked rifles for a Classic selection and for the photos in Africa.

I would think having a few of the well known makers would also be nice.

Practically modern cartridges would be fine and even well suited. Versions of synthetic or composite stocks are fine if you like the look.

I would consider my 280a.i a suitable Plains game cartridge or any modern 7mm would be good. .308 and .30-06 are possibly more readily available.

I have a .375H&H so it makes the list

I don’t have anything bigger but a double in something starting with a 4 is probably a step up or DG rifle option.

Kimber Super American .30-06
Clayton Nelson Pre 64- Winchester 9.3x62
CZ 550 404 Jeffery
Sabatti Safari Big five 470 nitro express

I’ve got a couple options to pick from so roll the dice in each category

1) Double Rifle:
a) Pre War Westley Richards 450NE Droplock
b) Pre War Rigby 470NE

2) Medium Bore Bolt Action
a) Pre War M70 .375 H&H
b) Pre 64 M70 .458WM
c) Pre 64 custom M70 416

3) Bolt Action Plains Game Rifle
a) Pre War Rigby .275
b) Pre War Lee Speed .303
c) Pre War M70 300 H&H
d) Pre War M70 .30-06
e) Pre War M70 .257 Roberts

I’d like to add the following options to my Africa Gun Safe/Collection
a) Westley Richards 318 Magazine Rifle
b) Holland & Holland .375 H&H Magazine Rifle
c) Jeffery .404 Magazine Rifle
d) Holland Royal or Purdey in 500NE or 577

My choice would be because it's what I have:

-Brno Zkk 600 in 270 Winchester for small-medium plains antelopes.

-Cz 550 Magnum for large plains antelopes (it wouldn't be bad to carry the Voere in 8x68S or the Remington 700 in 338 Winchester Magnum that I also have in the gun cabinet).

-Cz 550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott for DG.

“ 3 most classic rifle battery for Africa”

275 Rigby bolt action
375 H&H bolt action
470 NE in a double rifle naturally.

7x57MAUSER - Appropriated by Rigby as the 257RIGBY but still a very useful cartridge.
404J - Did the dirty work while the 416RIGBY took the credit.
470NE - Gotta have a stopping rifle.

I have none of these.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
