No, it's not like saying I want to go to the US. The US is a country, just like Moz, Tanz, etc. They have their provinces (some) which would be like our states.

For me it's an easy way to find out if people are actually interested without wasting breath. I do it everywhere we go or are planning to go. I say simply we are going to Africa or Europe or South America, and if someone asks where then I know 2 things- 1. they are interested 2. they are worth talking to because they aren't dummies and realize there are multiple countries on the continent

I don't consider it wrong as long as the person actually understands that Africa is not a country. It is just like telling someone you are going to Europe this summer rather than listing the countries you plan to visit.
