Thinking of getting myself a second hunting rifle

Hi Yaseen

Since you are hunting African game and already have a .308 Win that can take down most African game at short and long distances with the correct bullet weight and shot placement, you have two choices left as you are standing in the middle...

The bottom choice would be something with a lighter and faster bullet speed a few calibers to consider would be:

.243 Win - Shoots fast and flat perfect for small to medium game even large game if your shot placement is up to it!
6.5mm class will be 25-06 Remington, 6.5x55 or 6.5 Creedmore all very good calibers for long distance and flat shooting.
.270 Win - Shoots fast and flat with a heavier bullet better suited for medium to large game

These calibers will all "out punch" and are faster with flatter trajectory's which make them good long range calibers for African game:

.7mm Rem Mag
.300WM
.338 Win Mag

On the HARD hitting side that you can take basically anything with but without the speed is the below:

9.3x62
.375 H&H Magnum - (Very versatile caliber)
.458 WM or .458 Lott

However these calibers are intended for thick skinned game at closer ranges, they have less speed but much heavier bullets that give exceptional penetration and stopping power.

The simple answer IMO is a .300 WM or a .375 H&H depending on the primary use you anticipate! Ammo is everywhere and if you reload, the available variety of bullets for either is huge. Good luck with your decision!!!

...the answer for the one-gun-hunter....

Well, if 338 is on your list and you are willing to take that kind of recoil, you might as well get the 375H&H and be ready for anything. This is Africa Hunting after all, otherwise 300WM.

Agree fully!!!

One way to get to the mid sized cartridges without beating yourself up is to consider the 338 Federal. Its a 308 necked up to a 338; the kick is marginally more than the 308 and it's a 300 yard gun with excellent knockdown power.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
