Hi everyone,
Have you found it necessary to reduce your load when switching from conventional bullets (dgx, for example) to the a-frame? I’m specifically looking at the 400 grain .416.

Any data points are welcome.

I had to reduce it for brass solids, but A-Frames should use similar load data to Nosler Partitions which is on Nosler’s website. I haven’t reloaded A-Frames because I still have 2 boxes of factory Ammo (416 Rem).

I forget which caliber this pertains to but I had a load with Partitions and tried the same powder charge, etc with Aframes and the velocity was the same. I mentioned this at the SCI convention to somebody while I was at the Swift booth and Swift's owner overheard me and just about lost his mind. He said that you can't do this! I remember it wasn't a max load with the Partition so figured the experiment had plenty of room for safety. That being said, the Aframes should give higher pressures than other lead core bullets and Wyatt Smith's advise should be followed.

Safety First! Do not guess or extrapolate based on anecdotal evidence. Use the Swift manual, start low and work up. Remember you want to be holding a rifle, not a harp!

No matter the bullet, you need to work up the load. As far as Swift AF’s, I haven’t noticed an appreciable difference in what constitutes a MAX load versus other bullets. The only one I can think of is the 286gr in the 9.3x62. I can use a grain more powder with the Hornady.
I can switch to the Swift 180gr in the .30/06 and .300Wby, 225gr in the .338 RUM, 300gr in the .375 HH and 400gr in the .416 Ruger without adjusting powder charge, although accuracy and POI may vary.

FYI, here is link to info and data I posted. Per Harmut Broemel, developer of QuickLoad, the shot start pressure for Swifts in about 7kpsi higher than regular copper jacket bullets.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
