Suppressors on DG Rifles?

My nephew just shot a hog near me with a supressor .He was using a 7 mm rem mag and it sounded like a 22 .He loves them to coyote hunt so people dont freak out about them shooting at night .I would like to try one on my 338-378 weatherby and my 416 rem mag .

You are still not going to change my mind my 375 H&H k98 original Musgrave is staying Supressor free so is my 458 Lott, CZ550.

When hunting I don't mind the noise and nobody else that can talk as complained I don't speak animal so don't know how they feel about it but normally when I get up close to them they are dead.
As for accuracy without suppressor I can easily do a ragged 5 shot hole at 50 meters with the 375 H&H and with the 458 Lott if I do my bit and concentrate on the SRO reflex sight I also do less than 1 MOA off sticks (4 legged) not from the bench.

@DWB has some serious groups going with his 404 Jeff, 450 Rigby (both with Aimpoints) and even now with open sighted 500Jeff.

For me it comes down to practise and the will to achieve a good posture and be able to handle bigger calibers. We are lucky that with our BASA shoots alone we shoot over 120 rounds of big bore per year then we still play at the range ourselfves and hunt.

When I was 18 and got my 375 H&H for the first time it kicked the hell out of me but you get used to it. Then the 458 Lott came along and I had to get used to it as well as it was a definite step up but you get used to it.

We see shooters with new bigger guns at BASA who normally shoot well have a dip in scores when starting out with a new bigger calibre then a few shoots later overcome the new gun and more recoil. Get proper ear protection to start with get a stock that fits you and start with average loads and work up.

I saw it with my boy and bunch of juniors at BASA if they can slowly work themselves up and manage it why not anyone it's just the will to try and do it. We have girls shooting 375 H&H and ladies even bigger guns the whole day long normally 18-20 per shoot.
Just Saying!!!

My sentiments exactly, I'm glad to have taken the time to read through all of the posts. I have both my 375 Ruger and my 416 Ruger suppressed and I personally don't care what others think. I find it interesting that most of the "dangerous game double rifles" don't hold groups under an inch and a half at 50 yards (time for ALL of you double gun owners to tell me that "your gun" shoots 1/2" moa all day long}. Truth be told if "any" of my rifles in any of the calibers that I own grouped like that they'd be in the scrap pile.

I say do what you want as its your gun and the hell to what others think including me !!

Perhaps you can report if you shot some DG with your battery of suppressed rifles and whether everything always went well. If you are an experienced DG hunter and have practice with big bore double rifles, you have surely also experienced dangerous situations and it would be interesting for us, old African hunters influenced by old traditions and who may have been doing a lot wrong for decades, to know whether the suppressors did not interfere in such situations.

Several PH have posted on this site that suppressors help them.

True, but I'm not a PH and prefer a real gun in my hands.

Right. But you said no one else has complained which just isn’t true.

A gun with a supressor is the same real gun.

If someone doesn’t want to use a suppressor that is cool. But to resort to “you ain’t a real man” shows the limits of the non suppressor argument.

Yes, no one has complained thus far I don't need a PH to hunt in my own country but the few times I did there was no complaints.
I do own a suppressor on my 6.5x55 and I see the use for it there.
Even had one on my Ruger 204 which I have sold recently last year.
I just want to be perfectly clear and I mean myself my viewpoint and my love of hunting with big caliber rifles does not go with a supressor.
A supressor takes away the awesome setup and balance it has when moving, tracking, stalking through thick stuff and shooting with it. Giving me the confidence to know that I am capable of taking down DG and Large game quickly and efficiently.

my PH was delighted when he saw i was hunting with a suppressor and said he wished more people used them.

It seems there's an ilk here that is hot and bothered that someone on the internet doesn't do it the way they think it should be done. This reminds me of the "when i was in school we walked uphill both ways" type of argument... as if they earned some type of status and others haven't.

Is it not enough to just do things your way that you have to then disparage those that don't?

I think some people don't understand what we are trying to tell them. The topic is Suppressors on DG Rifles? and some of us warn that this can cause problems in certain situations. The use of suppressors for hunting PG is up to each individual, and I don't know why anyone of us would be against it.

The difference here is when things go wrong people get injured and die....

There is romance involved in all of this for many of us. And again, I take pride in having learnt to shoot my big guns.

But each to his own.... I honestly do believe big animals don't react when incoming if there is no boom....

And yes, just shot my first ele at 15 paces full frontal as he dropped his head coming through the grey sickle bush as a grey blur, and even though I missed the brain, I am pretty damn sure the boom made him turn....

All I hear is experience. Can you or anyone provide one example of someone using a suppressor on dangerous game and it causing problems?

There is a thread going here where people shot the wrong animal during African hunts. Would better communication with the PH not be a positive in dangerous game hunting?

My Blaser r8 suppressed is same length or less than MOST dangerous game rifles. So I can’t figure out how that would be a negative

No, but I can imagine what would have happened to some people, including myself, if they/I had had one on their/my rifle and no open sights at that. We don't want to force anything on you, we just warn you. Everyone should do what they want with the advice. The absolute majority of you hunt with a PH for backup, so a lot is allowed, even if it is not exactly on the safest side.

I provided a detailed report on how a suppressor on a full size 300 Win Mag was an absolute issue simply trying to stalk roe deer from cover. I concluded I would never try it so armed on a buffalo.

I have also posted that I have created a "backyard" suppressed rifle built around an R8 with 6.5x55 barrel. It will be just fine from a stand. It is far handier than the .300 was in Hungary, but it is still meaningfully longer than any of my dangerous game rifles - especially the R8 based .375 and .404.

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
