Have you ever had that experience where you feel that the actual people taking care of the clients day to day are the reason it keeps going even despite the management or leader of a company? That is how I'd sum up my experience with Jannie Otto Safaris. The times interacting with anyone other than Jannie were good to very good, but anything with Jannie himself was just dealing with his poor communication, refusal to acknowledge problems or his mistakes, and frequently him attempting to blame me for things he did wrong with bookings or arrangements.

Short Summary:

  • Jannie was very high pressure to add on days/animals/activities. I’ve done two auction hunts before and fully expected to add on to it, but Jannie started off high pressure from the start and kept it up.
  • All of Jannie’s offered side trips, not just trophy fees, were way over priced. Some were double cost of direct booking.
  • Jannie’s communication was very poor. I had to be very crisp in detailing what was wrong with the itinerary (“your itinerary notes the 18th for arrival but we actually arrive on the 21st”) and even with that it took multiple repeated communications to get resolved.
  • Jannie made several mistakes in booking lodging for us, though he had promised it would all be smoother and easier than doing ourselves. Everything he booked cost more than direct booking and was not at the quality/amenity level promised. In one case, the hotel wasn’t even confirmed even though he stated it was.
  • Once he was paid our last night at Sandy Mount, and before our trip to Victoria Falls, he stopped responding to the issues I encountered with his booked arrangement the rest of the trip.
  • I was forced to file a credit card dispute due to not receiving what was paid for and Jannie not replying to my multiple attempts to reach a resolution.

The longer story:

I was looking for a good trip to take my wife and son with me to hunt. They had been to South Africa with me before but not for hunting. I wanted them to get a true experience of wild animals and to see more of Africa. I had seen an auction from Jannie Otto for 3 days hunting and 3 days at Victoria Falls. I bid on that and won. In my first message to Jannie after winning, I stated that I wanted to add on both days and more animals to the auction, as I knew that was part of the expectation for auctions. I also stated I wanted to bring my son and was prepared to pay the additional costs there. Even so, his first response to me was high pressure to add on more. He wanted me to book 12 days with them and include other activities that he would book at his inflated rates. This was my 3rd auction hunt, as I found them useful for trying out new outfitters, and this was by far the highest pressure one with also the highest trophy fees and most marked up activity costs.

Jannie had told me to just arrange my flights to get to Johannesburg and they’d organize everything else. I massively regret having trusted his suggestion. Every single activity or lodging that he booked outside of my time at Sandy Mount had an issue with it.

The hotel to stay at upon arrival in JNB for recovery and adjusting to time change before heading to Sandy Mount – it was not a confirmed booking. Though Jannie sent me confirmation that hotel was booked, when I contacted the hotel they informed me the hotel was full. Not only did it already have a long waitlist, I was not on that list and there was no request in my name. Jannie confirmed this when I asked directly. He apparently had no plans to have shared that with me without me having asked. I booked my own hotel, a better quality one at a lower cost than Jannie’s offering, as there was no way I could risk not having a hotel upon arrival with my family.

In JNB, I also realized that the hotel that Jannie had booked for us in Victoria Falls was not the promised Zambezi river front hotel category that was listed in the auction. He booked us in a hotel in town with no view and nothing nearby it. All the itineraries that Jannie had sent me noted A’Zambezi River Lodge, a river front hotel, but he changed it at the last minute without telling me it was changed. When I raised this to Jannie, he claimed that the booked hotel was the only one with connecting rooms. A quick email to the A’Zambezi proved this to be a lie, as they did have connecting rooms. Jannie never truly explained the downgrade here and never apologized for it. When I pointed out that the auction itself “accommodations at a Zambezi River lodge for 3 nights”, he just tried to convince me the in city hotel was a good one.

After those two days, we took our flight to Bloemfontein and met our PH for the drive to Sandy Mount. I will say that the time at Sandy Mount was enjoyable and there was no pressure at all from people there. We enjoyed our time at Sandy Mount and the people we interacted with were very welcoming for my wife & son. We did see a lot of animals, and a lot of variety, though I can't say we saw any great trophies. But I did get a good Gemsbuck and a Black Wildebeest. The lodge staff, the trackers, and other PHs there were all very cheery and engaging. If it weren’t for the poor interactions with Jannie both before & after our time there, I would have considered going back. Maybe I’d do a trip there with JKO Safaris, as I met some of their PHs and had met Jaques before at a show, but absolutely not with Jannie.

Sadly, once we left Sandy Mount, things were downhill again. Jannie had booked only a single room for the 3 of us at JNB City Lodge hotel for our overnight stay before we flew to Vic Falls the next day. I happened to have messaged Jannie that morning to confirm we had two connecting rooms as I needed to do a conference call late that night. His reply was that they had only booked a single room. This was a big surprise since (1) the hotel had a limit of 2 people per room and (a) the price Jannie charged me for the one room was twice the price I had seen online for a single room. Apparently, Jannie just massively overcharged us on the one room and ignored the hotel policies for max people in a room. I asked Jannie to compensate us for the additional cost due to their overcharging and the last-minute rate we had to pay upon arrival for a 2nd room, but he never addressed that.

Our flights to Vic falls went ok. The hotel was disappointing not to be near anything or have any sort of view. We tried to be out of it as much as possible and make the best of things. Jannie had advised us to make plans for activities and meal reservations once we arrived at the hotel. Thankfully, I didn’t listen to that advice. A friend advised me to book key things in advance, as when they had visited they found the best activities were booked out even 3 weeks in advance.

Once back from Vic Falls, we were thankfully done with Jannie’s arrangement and had no more stress about possible issues from Jannie's mistakes. I booked us at Africa Sky, and boy it was great to be back there to wrap up the trip. In my previous trips I had come to know & talk with everyone there. They had all heard about my family and it was cool to have them meet my family for the first time. My wife & son liked getting to meet everyone they had heard about and to see the place that Gilbert jokes is my second home. It really felt like that and was great to wrap up our trip with an awesome experience. At least we ended it all on a good high note. My son is already asking when we will go back and see everyone at Africa Sky again. He was thrilled to hear we’re headed back next year, even happier to hear that we will not be hunting with Jannie or have all the problems we had there. Next time we’re headed to an outfitter I’ve hunted with before and know will take good care of us without pressure but with awesome experiences, great integrity, and a welcoming family environment where they really make you feel appreciated, valued, and taken care of.

I've never been a fan of the auction hunt game or attending outdoors shows that cater to that stuff. Just don't like crowds or buying a pig-in-a-poke. Once the auction comes down, the bidder is locked in. I prefer to shop around before I lay my money down.

I also don't trust anyone else to do my bookings. Or, unless absolutely necessary, work on my car. Or fix my gun. I guess it's more than not trusting others. I enjoy doing things for myself.

Of course everyone is not like me. Sounds like your expectations were not entirely met. That sucks. How did you make out with the credit card claim?

For my previous 5 hunts I'd done all my own bookings. This one proved that I need to keep doing that, or at least use someone trustworthy and complete like Darren & Jennifer. I've booked some flights through them and only had good experiences with plenty of support and Q&A time.

Thanks for the write up. It sounds like a bit of a mess.

Maybe it’s just me, but the majority of problems seem to be associated in some way with with auction hunts.
My previous auction hunts were actually great experiences and led me to booking return hunts with each outfitter. In those I never felt like I was treated different for being an auction hunt. I think the key is to ensure you do your research on people before booking an auction. I thought Jannie was OK based on not having seen negatives about his operation, but I now also realize I didn't such anything positive posted about him either.

On the pressure to add on more things, I have a feeling Jannie does that for non-auction items as well. And for them taking care of additional trips or lodging, I think their poor service also applies whether auction or not.

Good thing for me is that I have another hunt next week on my own. That will give me a great experience again in Africa. My family just has to wait for a few months to have their good experience there.

Thanks for posting. Jannie uses auction hunts for a lot of his bookings and marketing. I hunted with them in May this year but not much at Sandy Mount. I never met him in person but my experience with his staff was positive and took several great animals. I didn't use him for any other arrangements. They have a lot of fine print in the contract most customers don't realize or pay attention to. They seem to think after your hunt you should not be able to go to another outfitter. I feel when they deliver you to the airport it's none of their business where you are going. My biggest complaint is I contracted with a different taxidermist than there "recommended" -hence pressured, taxidermist. Their taxidermist picked up my trophies even though I personally tagged them for my choice, then I had to make arrangements weeks after getting home to get them transferred to the proper one. Overall a good trip with a good P.H. and staff and several Rowland ward animals but I won't book again. Too many better places to go.

Sorry about your experience. I just wrote a report about my second hunt at Sandy Mount with Alex Goss as my PH. You won't go wrong with Alex at Sandy Mount. I've taken two great Buffalo there, a great Sable, a Lechwe, and an awesome Springbok. Contact me anytime and I'll tell you about my experience. Alex was on top of everything!

Thank you very much for sharing this detailed report. Where did you buy this auction hunt? Have you informed them of how your trip went? Please do so.
We must all share this kind of information so that others do not suffer the same fate. There are too many good operators out there to not.
Not all auctions hunts are the same. There are terrible ones and really good ones. I help with the auction for my San Angelo SCI Chapter Banquet. Firstly we would not accept a donation like this, it would have to include way more. But more importantly we thoroughly vet each item donated. Most charity banquets take ANY auction item offered to them. Herein lies the danger.
Thanks again

Concur with @Philip Glass on this… please let the organization you won the auction from know about your experience…

My wife and I have done numerous auction hunts… we’ve been fortunate that most have gone exceptionally well.. we see auction hunts as a way of supporting our favorite conservation organizations, so we bid on (and win) auction hunts fairly regularly..

We did have one particular hunt start much the same way your hunt is described… extremely poor (almost none) communication, to the point we became very suspicious about how things were going to move forward, or if we were going to even have a hunt to attend at all…

I contacted the auction coordinator at DSC and asked for either help, or a refund.. they promptly got involved and sorted the outfitter out for us.. and we ended up having a reasonably decent hunt (certainly not the best auction experience ever, but it wasn’t bad)…

Sorry to hear about your experience. I’ve done a couple of auction hunts. One was off the charts good and the other was very good.
I won’t hesitate to do another but I try and do A LOT of research on the outfitter and normally have one specific animal in mind, everything else is incidental. I have spent around 5,000 to 10,000 dollars on extra animals and everyone has walked away happy.

First clue… auction hunt.

Before getting involved in or all giddy about discounted auction hunts, ask yourself this, “Will the outfitter/promoter feel more obligated to provide top service on an auction hunt or a normal, full pay hunt?”

You went on an Auction hunt.

I have the following 3 things to say about auction hunts:

1. There is no free chicken.
2. see number 1
3. refer to number 1

First clue… auction hunt.

Actually, a smart outfitter should be inclined to provide best service to a NEW to Africa auction hunter. Give up a little so a new guy will come back. I gotta say though, if I was an outfitter encountering a client who I knew was a habitual auction bargain hunter, I would not be particularly encouraged to go the extra mile. No reason to purposely shortchange that adveturer/cheap client but an operator often has a lot going on running the place. Other things could easily take precedence over a proven switch-hitting bargain hunter client.

“Will the outfitter/promoter feel more obligated to provide top service on an auction hunt or a normal, full pay hunt?”

They should... if they arent prepared to treat the auction hunt winner the same as a hunter that books otherwise, they frankly are in the wrong line of work..

Outfitters dont provide hunts to SCI/DSC/Ducks Unlimited/Wild Sheep/etc because they are nice guys and just want to give away stuff for free.. there are very clear business motivations for doing so.. and there are several things they get in exchange for that "free" hunt..

They get preferential placement for their booths in shows.. they typically gain a client that they likely would have never had otherwise.. they get their brand/name out in front of a very large audience, conservation organizations obtain funding which helps them to put on additional shows and provide outlets for outfitters to sell their services, etc..

Is there some risk involved? sure.. theres risk involved in EVERY business decision that gets made.. .

But.. FAR more often than not, an auction hunt winner is going to book additional days, additional animals, etc.. while an auction hunt might not be a big money maker for an outfitter, it is rarely a loss leader.. they typically make at least a little money or break even in the long term.. AND.. if the client has a good time, it is HIGHLY likely that the client will return and the next time around will be paying full fare...

Lets not forget that as almost often as not, auction hunt winners actually pay equal or greater value for a hunt than it is actually worth... it is not uncommon for outfitters to over value hunts they donate ... they do this for several reasons.. one, the greater the "value" of the donation, the greater the "perk" typically given to the outfitter by the conservation organization hosting the event where the hunt is auctioned.. two, some people are quite literally just looking to make a charitable contribution and get a tax write off... I watched a $50K elephant hunt sell 3x times at DSC a few years back.. 3 guys bid the hunt up well over the $50K value.. the first guy won the hunt and then immediately donated it back to DSC.. who immediately auctioned it again.. the second guy won at over the $50K value.. and then immediately donated the hunt back to DSC.. who immediately auctioned it again.. and then the third guy (who they all planned on letting win the hunt from the beginning) won the hunt for over the $50K value...

AND... you need to look no further than AH to see the negative consequences of NOT treating an auction hunt winner the same as you treat a hunter that pays the outfitter directly for a hunt... Its simply a stupid move on an outfitters part to ever treat ANYONE poorly that hunts with them under any conditions.. guided hunts are part of the hospitality industry.. bad word travels 10x faster than positive accolades.. and word of mouth is how most outfitters obtain most of their business... if the words coming out of mouths are negative, the outfitter is going to see more financial consequence than just what he might experience from donating a hunt to SCI/DSC/whomever..

The outfitter wasnt forced to donate a hunt.. the donation was a conscious business decision.. that was made for a very specific reason..

I hope you are beginning to see premium prices paid for your auction hunts, increasing the funds generated for conservation.

The current model common with a lot of these leaves dirt cheap hunts with very little money generated for conservation and all too often disenchanted first time clients unlikely to return to Africa.

I may even make it up to San Angelo this time around…

Thx for sharing your experience.

But somehow i dont seem to underamdtand.

You bid on an auction for a 3day hunt but are not ecpetected to go 3 days hunting?

Before this thread descends into auction hunt bashing, not all the reviews on here were auction hunts. Treat it like any other hunt report, please.

On most auction hunts it’s understood that the buyer will add extra animals and/or days. I feel this is how they can justify selling auction hunts. There are a lot of outfitters that donate a lot of hunts to different organizations each year and if the winner doesn’t add anything their bottom lines will suffer.
I had one outfitter tell me that he donated a sable hunt and the client shot his bull on the first day of a 10 day hunt. He refused to shoot anything else and just sat around camp drinking his booze and eating his food. He stopped donating for a few years because of it.
