Please elaborate on making them yourself....
I haven't made ones with springs, mostly because I don't have the machine tools to come up with a good method yet. On the list of projects.
What I have done is:
1. Prepare the brass. If I'm going to make a dummy/snap cap, I want to be able to identify it by touch and sound, in the dark. So what I do is drill small (say 3/32 inch) holes in various locations on the case. Yes, you'll need to countersink, sand, polish to make sure you won't scratch a chamber, but I can tell by sight and by feel they are dummy rounds.
2. Then I "prime" the case with an old pencil eraser. They are close enough in size to seat, and the rubber will absorb the firing pin strike. I've also tried using RTV and letting it cure, but that never seemed to work out well, and I thought it a bit soft. I'm wondering if a polyurethane might work, but haven't played with that yet. Pencil erasers seem to work, and if they dimple from too much use, they're easy to replace. Be sure to trim so they are flush with the base.
3. I "load" the case with a few BBs. You don't want to pack the case, you want them to be able to rattle around. Now I can identify the dummy/snap cap by sight (the holes), feel (you can feel the holes) and sound (just shake it... you'll see).
4. Seat a bullet to proper overall length. You don't need a fancy bullet for this, simple cup and core will do.
I thought I had a photo here somewhere, but can't find it. I'll have to dig them out and take more photos.
