Scope for .416 Ruger?

Just picked up a Ruger Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger, thinking about putting a lightweight low powered scope on it with those Alaska Arms quick detach scope rings. Any suggestions on a scope?

Leupold VX-6, 1-6x24 with CDS & Firedot

Leupold VX-5, 1-5x24 with CDS & Firedot

They are lightweight (you carry the rifle 99% of the time)
They have great glass and a lifetime warranty
The CDS works well
The firedot makes shots into the shade on dark animals a breeze (you don't lose the shot opportunity searching for the black reticle)

If you were hunting out west (US) or in more open ground for plains game (Namibia) then the VX5, 2-10x42 with CDS & Firedot would be your ticket. On 2X you could still hunt dangerous game, but if you put both scopes into Alaska Arms QD rings, you can switch scopes to the 1-6x24 for DG and expect them to hold zero.

Questions:

Why low power scope?

Why not a scope that allows for the full potential use for the 416?

Ask yourself how long do you plan to use or own the 416? Then decide if you should get a low power 1-5, 1-6, 2-8, power scope? If your planning on using and owning your 416 for years then why not get a scope that progresses with you as you, your eyes, age. Why not go with a: 2-12, 2-14, 3 +, 4+, they allow for close shots on DG, PG, and North American larger big game.

If you are only planning short term owning the 416 then may be a 2 + scope would be advisable.

(Rhetorical) What's your budget? There are a lot of quality high grade, non big name scopes and a few quality high grade name brand scopes on the market. Sooner or later it comes down to the quality of warranty service.

(Rhetorical) Are you a First or Second Focal Plane type?

JMO and 2 cents....shop around and compare <$1000.00 to >$3000.00 scopes then decide on which scope will work best for your hunting purposes within your budget.

Hey guys, just thought I would let you all know that Leupold has discontinued this scope. One of the best I have found for big bore with non CDS dial, It has held up for 5 safaris on my 458 Lott and still holding true.
Euro Optic has them on close out at 50% off MAP! That is only $699 for one great scope. I ordered 2 this morning, get it while you can.

The one to six scope above is what I just mounted on my 416 Alaskan. It's probably the most practical one you can put on your rifle. For up close dangerous game the 1X is perfect and the firedot Illuminated reticle is just icing on the cake. Considering the ballistics of the 416 caliber, if you can't get it done with a 6X, its probably further than you should be shooting.

I also purchased the above Leupold patrol 1-6.
None of the hamster mil-dot, Christmas tree, side focus stuff on it. A nice clean reticle.
I have an early left hand guide gun in 375 Ruger that I will be mounting it on.

My 375 Ruger African wears a VX5 2-10. Allows me to stretch the distance.
The 2 power is plenty low and has a great field of view for dangerous game.
This was the set up I used this last June on a Buffalo / plains game hunt.

Perfect timing on this thread, I picked up a m70 416 rem mag, I was thinking the accupoint 1-6 but that leupold and credo are cheaper.

On mine it was within 0.2 MOA to 300 yards which is very usable for a hold over. Close at 400 but no way I’d hold over to shoot something with a 416 at 400 unless it was a follow up desperation shot.

I agree on the 400 . Just to be clear you have the hunter hold not the segmented circle reticle? This one right
