Remington closing plant in Ilion NY after 207 years

CoElkHunter, my guess is the opposite - Remington made a deal Timney couldn’t refuse “Big $$$”. This deal only enhances Remington’s damaged reputation but does nothing for Timney....except makes them a lot of money for loaning out their name - on an inferior trigger (inferior to Timneys reputation for a making quality triggers). It’s like when you see Calvin Klein jeans selling in Costco or Walmart....just a cheaper version jean that has Calvin’s name as the selling point but Not their quality. So now, maybe Remington Rifles will be worth building into a “custom rifle” - buy one, throw out everything except the trigger and build something nice.
Maybe. Sometimes these name brand companies manufacture products JUST for Wal Mart, Costco, Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc. As an example, many of Cabela's labeled brand stuff USED to be of the same quality as the parent company. I bought a set of Cooper Discoverer 20" AT tires for my wife's Dodge truck a couple of years ago from and made just for Wal Mart for $144/tire for the same for $200/tire (and now $250) anywhere else. So far, they're of the same quality as other Cooper tires. So, what you're saying here is not ALWAYS the case? I'm careful not to shop for some name brand products just for the name.

Right. Let's blame it on the unions and liberals. That outfit has been under shitshow management for decades. The poster child for screwy corporate decisions. I'm a business historian who'd love to get his hands on the company records. More drama than a soap opera script.
If unions and liberals were removed from America we would prosper! What you say is incredibly ridiculous. Good luck up there... I've seen both ruin industries and entire cities in the USA. I've seen it all over the last 50 years cleaning up industrial messes left behind primarily by unnecessary wars that were scheduled for profit.

They closed several other plants earlier Eddystone PA comes to mind and at least they're not closing they're simply moving to a more Constitution friendly state which enjoys greater freedoms such as less taxes and nice properties on the cheap! Just stay away from the libdemtard cities as usual, unless you're a rapper that wants to burn your NFL boyfriend's house down or similar.

I know for a fact there are a couple of Goodyear tires that are only available at Walmart. They aren’t even on Goodyears website.

What I find really interesting is...

Timney is selling that same non adjustable trigger as a low cost option on their website for people wanting to swap out the old walker style trigger on older rifles..

if youre going to pay $124 for a replacement non adjustable Timney trigger.. why wouldnt you pay $134 for an adjustable one????

If you dont want to monkey around with and adjust your trigger.. then dont.. but for $10 more I can have the option to adjust out creep, overtravel, and pull weight vs having to live with whatever I get otherwise???

Seems like a no brainer to me..

But apparently Timney is selling them...

Im guessing if you have a box of "used" non adjustable "impact" triggers, you could list those things on ebay and get $70-$90 each for them all day long..

I LOVE timney triggers.. literally every single one of my bolt actions have one with the exception of one that has a Rifle Basix trigger in it..

but I cant fathom a reason for getting a non adjustable one that is factory set to 4lbs..
Skimflation. Right now consumers only look for the brand name and cheapest package. Have you seen what's on the breakfast cereal shelves these days? If that box of Cheerios was any thinner it would be a cardboard poster. But hey, that's still a box of branded General Mills Cheerios in the cart ... not some pathetic no name crap in an ugly bag (that actually tastes better!).

Same with the Wal Mart Coopers not being on Cooper's website. They're made exclusively for Wal Mart. Same with Discount tires. I'm looking at their Rocky Mtn. ATs for my truck made exclusively for Discount. For the greatly reduced price and apparently same quality, I don't care.

This one was 4.5 lbs.
have seen as low as 3.5 lbs up to 6lbs.
They vary a lot
Their adjustable triggers are supposedly set at the factory for 3.5 lbs. I don't have the tool to measure mine but both of them for my Springfield and Mauser feel like that might be about right.

Sounds like nothing has changed at Remington re product development and quality control. Cheap and junky. This move to Georgia is nothing more than a publicity stunt. Wait and see. Just like Huntsville, the plug will get pulled before it ever gets up and running. And they will still blame the liberals and unions. And people will still believe them.

Really? Now the unions are responsible for the industrial messes? Good gawd. :D So the unions were responsible for the mess Remington made of its operation in Huntsville? Nope. Union was powerless in good old right to work Alabama. Corporate management did it all on their own. And here's a news flash: aren't the liberals the ones keeping conservative corporations from making more industrial messes? Damn Clean Air Act and EPA! :D

I have a union made Win 70 that was poorly chambered. I have a union made Marlin with poorly drilled holes for sight bases.. Not a single management guy did those. By the way.... it was Nixon who signed into law the EPA.

@CoElkHunter
You can keep your crappy coper AT3 tires. I got 30,000km/ 18,000 miles out of mine. They were over priced garbage. I now run FALKEN WILD PEAK. Done 30,000km and still like new.

Yes, it was Nixon. In those days GOP were the liberals. Yep. Democrats were hanging black people from the lampposts. Remember Governor Wallace?

They already are coming with Timney triggers. Only issue is they are a fixed NON adjustable trigger especially made for Remington. I already have a box full of them. Every customer that has bought a new Remington has had me install a Trigger Tech in the last 2 months.
And that is a dam good idea your customers have. All mine have trigger techs, no matter the model, year or trigger they came with. Last years black Friday sale from trigger tech was amazing, $179 cnd and free shipping, this last one was good but not like last years, glad I stocked up in 2022. I have a box of "remington" triggers. Not sure why a company in 2023 would not install an adjustable trigger. Many others have for years now.

They aren’t the Cooper AT3s. I wouldn’t pay what Cooper wants for those now. No, these are just Cooper Discoverers made for Wal Mart. We’ll see how long they’ll last. Great in snow though.

I think you’re on the wrong website with that thought process.

Socialism is as socialism does. Not surprising they finally drove Remington out.
As somebody who lived in socialism for almost half of its life I can confirm that this wouldn't happen back then.

Probably for the 20th time...

This is not the same company. RemArms purchased the old Remington Firearms assets.

Immediately after the acquisition, the old Remington Union began negotiating to have who they deemed worthy to begin working again, being the more senior people, otherwise known as highest paid labor. RemArms wanted to hire back who they felt was worth it via meritocracy...which we all know is a liberals favorite criteria for hire....

I would argue RemArms began their planning for moving the factory during due diligence and it was confirmed during the union demands. This, coupled with a hostile state government which quite literally prohibits its citizens from carrying firearms for self defense which ended in a landmark Supreme Court ruling, as well as their continuous additions to bans on the most popular rifle in America, makes it even more logical.

Tax incentives added to non union labor makes this as easy a decision for a business to make as ever purely from the financial sense not even accounting for outdated and dilapidated equipment of the old buildings.

So yes, without the Union scale pay wages, obsolete building maintenance, endless NY political issues, RemArms can now focus on improved quality of product.

Things will get better, but they need to show the customer to earn that trust back. I'm sure there are quite a few covenants to the note...
TTundra, you hit the nail on the head! This was entirely a business decision on the part of Remington and the “new owners” because the old/original Remington no longer exists - just the Name. Moving a company is always a monumental task and opportunity to improve profits. Successful moves involve multiple strategies to trim overhead: 1). If a union exists it’s an opportunity to get rid of it. 2). Negotiate huge tax incentive deals with whatever City/State you move to - 10 years with No property taxes (and other reduced taxes) is easily obtained....because of the promise to employ 100s of local residents. 3). Lease vs build offices/warehouses - a 15 year lease will include 1-2 years of Free Rent and landlord will provide a “construction allowance” of $$millions towards tenants buildout. Regarding Unions, I don’t think they are bad for business or workers but both are better off without them. The “threat” of unionization keeps companies “honest” and insures that wages and benefits are competitive....otherwise a Union can easily infiltrate the business. The first thing that happens after a Union gets into a business is that the head of Human Resources gets fired and likely the CEO - as they should - because they failed to properly care for their workers. Competitive wages, benefits, and working conditions are the best deterrent from unionization. Unions are also a Business first and their top priority is to make $$$ for the Union. If it weren’t for unions many businesses would treat workers less fairly - but the best opportunity for workers is in a good company with room for advancement and pay increases based on merit....that is my opinion, based on my experience with both environments and understand others will have a different view.

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
