Red Dot on my Double Rifle

Just received back my Double Rifle from the gunsmith. For those who know the Merkel, the mounting plate sits right in front of the action. Mounting the red dot here, was too close to my eye, not mentioning the affect it had on where the red dot lies. Having it mounted here, on mine, it always showed right and high when I picked up the rifle when comparing it to the front bead. Obviously, you set the red dot to your rifle, so bullets still flew true.

Had them cut into the ribbing to move the red dot sight forward. This rectified the off centre of where the red dot fell. Red Dot now sits right above my bead when I pick up. Also, allowed the unit to sit lower than mounting on top of the ribbing for quicker target acquisition.

This is a Merkel in 500N.E

I literally just ordered a 1 MOA trijicon RMR for my wifes Chapuis Iphisi less than 5 minutes ago.

The Iphisi comes with 2 places milled out for talley bases. Chapuis is doing a run of RMR footprint plates that will fit into the talley cut outs. My plan is to mount the RMR is the most forward of the two cut outs (they are identical), which is right behind the rear flip up sights (same place the cut out is on your merkel).

Perfect set up. My Merkel in 470 had a Trijicon mounted in a similar manner by JJ Perodeau.

@mdwest, I have used both the RMR and the SRO on my Heym double. The mounting plate on the rifle excepts either one. The SRO gives a bit bigger field of view than the RMR which comes in handy from time to time. The RMR has a bit lower profile than the SRO. I have a RMR mounted on my 470 NE double and will be putting the RMR HD on the Rigby when it arrives. I think the RMR will work great on your wife's new double.

No sir, cant see a way to do it on a QR mount, and having it mounted this low. Batteries in these units lasts for years, so simply replace them after every year or two.

@mdwest I prefer the larger sight screen/window/field of view of the SRO. The red dot is visible when mounting the rifle rather than only when the rifle is properly mounted in the shoulder.

The additional field of view afforded by the SRO as compared to the RMR is not necessary if one has time to properly mount their rifle. If however one has to make a quick shot with their rifle, seeing the dot quicker may assist in quickly and properly shouldering the rifle and making that shot! Perhaps this is something like acquiring the target and starting the swing of a shotgun before the butt touches the shoulder.

The above works for me. One can't go wrong with any top loading (battery) Trijicon reflex sight. Otherwise, the sight must be removed for annual battery replacements.

I do NOT use item #1, Lens Cover.

Granted, that box would be even more ugly on a double rifle than either a RMR or SRO!

But age means that something like this is now necessary. What's more, the shooting performance is better than with open sights.

I have mine mounted on the rear base on my Krieghoff and Chapuis. I got used to that location and it was the easiest place to mount on those rifles. I am blessed that I can still shoot irons well but a red dot really improves the sight picture and just are more accurate and quicker to acquire a target with than irons.

I think you will really like it on your merkel.

Dave, I first hunted with this design where the sight was fitted like I have just had mine done, on a Verney in July of this year.
It was day and night for me so an easy decision to make.

It took me two years to make the decision on fitting a red dot to my double. It absolutely affects the classical look. I did realize that this means absolutely zero when you are 6ft under the ground.
