Question About Malarone

Never any problems with malarone. Just stay away from Larium (unless you want to question your sanity, lol).

You probably suffered from the effects of one of the dozens of other bugs that your body isn't immune to.

Jet lag can also do odd things, and you can snap back to feeling normal when your regular sleep patterns continue. It is amazing how bad a change in sleep can effect us physically and mentally.

We also pretty much abandoned Mefloquine.

I know- it was weird. I'm not saying that malarone will have sun exposure effect on everyone but it certainly did to me as witnessed by my PH. So I quit it with one day left to go in the hunt and symptoms went away soon after. I don't take any other medications so that is what it had to be. Just my 2 cents as a doc. I still may consider trying it again in a malaria ridden region because I'd rather have a skin rash then developing malaria for sure

For everyone who may have first hand experience with Malarone for Malaria prevention.
Have any of you had negative side effects while or after taking Malarone? I have read about many bad experiences with Larium and I know that Doxycycline can cause intense sensitivity to sun as well as upset stomache, but I haven't seen any reports from people who had trouble with Malarone.
I just got back from a trip to Botswana and took Malarone for a total of about 3 weeks. The longer I took it the more "hazy" I seemed to feel. The best way to describe it is brain fog and difficulty concentrating, as well as feeling just a bit off. I was also not getting a lot of sleep at the time so I just chalked it up to that. But after being off the med for a while I'm really thinking there was a connection to the Malarone. You know, sometimes you don't know you feel bad until you feel good again.
I would really appreciate any experience you all may be able to share.

I had a terrible time with Malarone. It made me feel extremely lethargic, extremely constipated, and overall just terrible. I think malaria would have been more tolerable. I've since only taken Lariam with good results. I've not had bad dreams but it may have made me feel a little depressed. Of course being away from home can do that by itself!
Everyone's is different but people need to know Lariam is not bad for everyone.

Guess I'm about like most all here. I've taken Malarone each time traveling to known areas. Not much reaction. Possibly a little fuzzy headed at times but it's hard to know if that's from basic lack of sleep/ jet lag or a symptom of Malarone???

Malarone is definitely the best with very little side effects. I have used Lariam on and off for nearly 15 years, beginning of this year I started getting side effects, won't touch it ever again. I only had one client who had bad reaction to Malarone. Some clients used Doxy, the sun burnt the hell out of them.

Hi Simon, I hope you're well and thanks for reply.
Just out of curiosity, what were the symptoms experienced by your client who had the bad reaction to Malarone?
And on a completely unrelated topic, is there any hope that elephant may open up in your area again? Last I heard the outlook was kind of bleak.

I had malaria 3 weeks ago, 3 days on coartem and I was fit. Would rather have 3 days of malaria than the terrible side effects I eventually got from Lariam.

@bassasdaindia is right, malarone is the best.

There are a number of malarone prescriptions

Suggest you see your gp

Reactions can vary from next to nothing to severe itches - blistering etc

Overall seek medical advice

You really don't want to be in the middle of nowhere with a severe reaction etc

Being in the middle of nowhere contracting malaria for the first time is another thing you really don't want to do.

This debate is basically like any other thing (rifle manufacturer, bullet manufacturer, etc.) There are some people that don't have side effects on certain malaria pills, and some that dont on others and vice versa. Same with gun preferences where some shoot well for some guys and not so well for others, and so on with federal vs. barnes vs. woodleigh vs. Hornady.

What I have always done is after reading something where many guys have experience, is take the 1 or 2 products that have the best feedback, then do research on side effects, ballistic results, etc and go from there.

No doubt there! My doctor told me the first time I went to SA, would you rather spend $30-$50 and not get malaria even if the chance is very low, or if you do get it what would be the repercussions then? $30-$50 is cheap insurance to me!

I have had side effects with Malarone, on the days that I was drinking alcohol (and not to excess). I took the Malarone with Dinner. Next time going to try to take with Breakfast instead and see if evening alcohol will cause the side effects again.

Maybe if you are on Larium and hallucinating the DGX will perform better!
