For everyone who may have first hand experience with Malarone for Malaria prevention.
Have any of you had negative side effects while or after taking Malarone? I have read about many bad experiences with Larium and I know that Doxycycline can cause intense sensitivity to sun as well as upset stomache, but I haven't seen any reports from people who had trouble with Malarone.
I just got back from a trip to Botswana and took Malarone for a total of about 3 weeks. The longer I took it the more "hazy" I seemed to feel. The best way to describe it is brain fog and difficulty concentrating, as well as feeling just a bit off. I was also not getting a lot of sleep at the time so I just chalked it up to that. But after being off the med for a while I'm really thinking there was a connection to the Malarone. You know, sometimes you don't know you feel bad until you feel good again.
I would really appreciate any experience you all may be able to share.
    Thank you!

Can't say that I have experienced any side effects from Malarone.

My doctor recommended Doxycycline and another doctor told me in 30 years he's seen TWO cases of sun sensitivity from Doxy. Said the sun sensitivity side effect is overblown and mostly a CYA for the drug companies.

I've not taken Malarone but know someone who had the side effects. I've used Doxy three times no problems

Used doxycycline to beat tick fever a few years back and underestimated the "sensitivity to sun" warning. Spent less than 45 minutes outside and my face burned pretty good. With that said I personally do not consider it an option for me on safari.

Used malarone earlier this year and saw no side effects whatsoever.

I've lived and worked in Africa for about 11 years now, in Angola and Nigeria. I took Larium for about 8 months out of the year and then got off it during the dry season in Angola. I was one of the few who didn't have side effects from Larium and I liked it because it was one pill a week. I do have a bit of ringing in the ears, but that could be the Larium and/or shooting.

Since living in Nigieria for 5+ years, I have taken Malarone and don't seem to have any sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssside eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeffects.

Son and I both recently used Doxy and just used a rub on sunscreen on our neck, nose, ears and cheeks and had no problem. But by being in the sun all day every day, we would have used the sunscreen regardless of the Doxy.

I had skin rash with malarone from The sun exposure. I knew it was a side effect of the medication because it only affected my sun exposed hands and forearms and neck. This was even after applying sunscreen. It caused a significant rash that itched. Went away when I stopped taking the medication. I also don't prescribe my patients doxycycline because of its chance of problems during sun exposure with the skin. But unfortunately Malarone gave me a similar side effect in Zimbabwe

I have used Malarone on multiple deployments in Africa ( 6 month duration) with the Army and on hunting trips with no side effects. I have experienced side effects with Mefloquine, which included sleep loss amongst other things ... switched to Malarone and no more issues.

I have used malarone during deployments for months at a time. I served in or commanded units where everyone was using it for months at a time. Neither I, nor any soldier of whom I was aware, suffered any negative effects. I use it whenever I am hunting malarial areas and will be doing so in October. I am surprised to read the sun-exposure issue with malarone noted by adgunner above. I am aware of the caution, but the Arab peninsula is a sunny place and we never had such reactions reported (troop wellness is a pretty closely monitored thing). Antibiotics, on the other hand, were very much a sun-exposure issue for some.

Red Leg, just to clarify, neither I or my troops had bad reactions to Malarone, but we did have problems with Mefloquine

Malarone is my go to for deployments and hunting.

Sorry, adgunner, I incorrectly attributed whitetail's comment.
We also pretty much abandoned Mefloquine.

Taken Malarone many times over many years, after some bad experiences with Lariam. Can't say I have seen any side effects . . . and I did with the Lariam!
