In my build up and preparation for my Nick Bowker Safari in June of 2025, my wife and I vacationed in Maui during the month of May and I was able to hunt Axis deer and Spanish goat with my Benelli Lupo in 300 Win Mag using Federal Fusion Tip 180 gr rounds. Other than dry firing and range time this would be the first practical application with the 300WM in a hunting scenario. I booked a two-day hunt with Earl Dunnam of Extreme Axis Deer Hunting on the island of Molokai. I ended up hunting with Earl twice and his partner La’a twice. Both are excellent guides and have incredible ability to spot game. My first two hunts with Earl were in very dense jungle, hunting uphill on foot often looking through two sets of jungle canopies. My last two hunts were with La’a, eight miles away, in a 4x4, in dry mountain country at elevations of about 2500 feet. During my two-day hunt, I was fortune enough to take two Axis bucks, one with Earl and one with La’a. Also a Spanish goat and an axis doe with La’a. Both bucks were taken in the 180-199 yard range and the Spanish goat at 150 yards.
I highly recommend Earl & La'a, and more importantly discovered friction points in my deployment and use of my rifle that I need to work out before heading to the Eastern Cape, SA.
