Susan Collins has already broken ranks, says wait for the next president. She's your typical self centered politician, more worried about here job than the country.
Collins, is a never Trumper. No big surprise. Romney will follow suit.

Trump has come out and said he'd nominate a woman next week. Odds are either Barrett or Lagoa. A Lagoa nomination could help Trump in Florida and she was confirmed by a 80-15 vote to her current position. If Trump wanted to do something really radical, he could nominate Merrick Garland. Better to get a moderate confirmed while showing some form of bipartisanship, than running the risk of another ultra-liberal getting an appointment for life. Obama nominated Garland, but of course Trump could not since it must be a woman.

McConnell can still get to 50 without Collins and Mirkowski.

collins is in a tough race. Give her credit for her Kavanaugh and impeachment votes.

Collins gets her support from independents, not Republicans. McConnell and Trump would much rather have a senate majority with Collins than be in the minority.

Mirkowski on the other hand..... this one And Alaska befuddles me.

Collins voted with Trump whenever her vote really counted. Because of the Kavanaugh vote she is in trouble and politically it makes sense for her to sit this one out until after the election.

Collins, risks alienating Republican voters, if she is simply catering to the moderates, at the expense of saving her job. Sticky situation.

Isn’t saving her job important to Republicans generallly?

Horns of a dilemma?

You have to look at her constituency. Republican voters there are more liberal than Democrat voters in places like Texas etc.. Also, it is more eliminating further attacks on her than catering to moderates.

Pelosi brought up the idea of impeaching Trump if he attempts to fill the seat before the election. Ed Markey says there will be payback if Trumps rams through a nomination before the election. Threatens to end the filibuster and pack the court with more judges.

Yes, it's going to get really interesting!

I believe that in order to pack the court with more than 9 judges would require a Constitutional Amendment, but I could be wrong.

I do know that in our US Constitution that the writers listed that there would be a supreme court with only 9 members or something along that order.

It is also interesting that the Democrats didn't learn from the last time that they started to change the rules to get something done. It came back to bite them in the rear when the Republicans took over and the Dem's were screaming to anyone that would listen that the Republicans couldn't do what they were doing after doing it themselves.

The best thing that came out of the Obama Presidency was his statement that "Elections have Consequences" and it works both ways.

The US Constitution doesn't give a number for SCOTUS. There has been as few as 5 and as many as 9 members.

FDR tried to pack the court with up to 15 members if I remember my high school history. He was unsuccessful. He did pack the nine with eight of his own selections. This was the start of the move away from constitutionalists.

......and the Democrats are screaming about Trump nominating three. Give me a break.

It all boils down to the election. If the real people can re-elect Donald Trump as well as retain the Senate and at least make inroads into the Representatives- it won't matter and the animals can riot all they want, get as many facelifts and hair dye jobs as possible and it won't change the ultimate outcome. As noted- Elections have consequences.

As someone said earlier, no matter who Trump nominates the Dems will have a hissy fit and their lackey's will burn things. What is really up for grabs in this election is the independents, so nominating a moderate and then quelling the mayhem is a smart strategy.

That's the wrong way of thinking. The people that really care about the Supreme Court are those on the right and the left. People in the middle are more concerned about other things.

You select a moderate than your base will stay home. Also, regardless of who Trump selects, even a moderate, he/she will be vilified by the left. So, if you are going to fight might as well fight for your guy.
