Xi with Trump – what embarrassing thing happened?
by DER SPIEGEL / Felix Dachsel
Good politics requires good personnel; this holds true worldwide. Certain bizarre scenes from Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the White House remain memorable. Donald Trump showed his state guest around like a tourist, pointing out the newly inaugurated helipad or the dusty construction site at the East Wing—where, God willing and the courts permitting, a majestic ballroom is eventually supposed to stand.
It is worth reading the article by Britta Kollenbroich and Bernhard Zand, in which they vividly describe the almost childish contest of wills between Trump and Xi—in all its unsettling banality.
Some displays of strength turn out to be signs of weakness and degradation. The White House released a video of the peculiar moment when Trump led the Chinese delegation to the Presidential Gallery in the West Wing. Trump proudly pointed out that he had replaced the portrait of his predecessor, Joe Biden, with an image of an autopen—an allusion to Trump’s accusation that Biden had used a signature-writing machine during his term in office.
The guest from China, President Xi Jinping, was doubled over with laughter. But what amused him? The ridiculousness of Joe Biden? Or the ridiculousness of Donald Trump?
