In the same way that AI can kill all of humanity, the above can and probably will happen. It isn't AI's fault.

The parallel and related issue you're bringing up is PRIVACY. Our BS government is one of the few civilized ones that cannot create a comprehensive Privacy regulation similar to Europes GDPR or the UK equivelant.

Absence regulations that level a playing field, create guard rails, and punish rule breakers, YES, everything about you is on the Net, monetized, exploited, and leased to the highest bidders.

With the communist ideals that seems to be gaining traction in the Democrat party, it could be a very distinct possibility that the future will hold no privacy for anyone.
As the rest of us start to die off, the younger generations that will be assimilated into a pseudo Chinese government type of environment will be the ones who live it
Social credit scores, digital currency, and the ability of the government to cut you off with the stroke of a keyboard.
A much more serious invasion of life then what we see now.

What does that have to do with AI?

All of the above was technically feasible and being used lightly by the US three letter agencies 15 years ago and heavily by the PRC ten years ago?

What I'm hearing is: we can't allow ourselves to compete in the arms race for AI because it will be abused to do X, Y, and Z. XYZ are already happening and only regulation can prevent further XYZ abuse. Regardless of XYZ, the nations that get AI first get all of AI. It's an arms race and the losers literally will lose their empires.

That’s why they want the population disarmed, it’s not for public safety, as they claim.

It has to do with the eventual federal data centers that will use AI to sniff out, and control the masses. Am I exaggerating? I hope so.
AI used for military reasons, or other non invasive public reasons is one thing, but do you really think that so called intelligence will stop there?
I highly doubt it.

AI = the death of humanity by a thousand cuts

Just wait until they build a giant Federal data center that tracks and compiles data on everything you do.
Tracking your purchases, bank accounts, where you travel, what you do and say across the internet.,etc,etc,etc......

Wait ? Who is Edward Snowden? For $1000 Alex.

And why is he hiding in countries with no extradition?

You have no idea how right you are.

For one. AI will infiltrate every security wall and make electronic, digital transactions almost impossible.

The world will quickly need to switch to a digital coin (world coin) that has your proof that you are a biologic/ human

For the name of safety and security 90% will give in to the World Coin ecosystem

Trump backed Republicans crush primary rivals in Arizona.
Now we just need Biggs to defeat Commie Katie Hobbs.
Didn’t a sitting democrat congressman beat out one of the commie DSA candidates as well in the democratic primary as well?

That’s until AI cracks quantum computing and fusion reactors. Then nothing will be secure anymore. Not even the blockchain.

I foresee a return to direct face to face meetings, physical letters and transactions in gold. Everything else might be an AI trap.

An AI data center and a non-AI datacenter are both datacenters. There is no end in sight for the need for data centers. The only question is whether we create buggy whips only policies
I don't think the opposition is intentionally trying to create "buggy-whip" policies. There are real concerns with data centers. It's easy to paint opponents as backward, until you're the one with a dry water well, or can't sleep at night because of constant noise, or see your electric bill increase (more so than it already has). This is yet another installment in the long-running series "big-business doesn't pay the true cost of their operations - data center edition" Kinda like when a fracking company sours someones well and then just walks away and says oops.

As to AIs going rogue, that is real but it also cannot be stopped unless we get a.) International Treaties, and b.) national laws on the use and controls of AI. These concerns are valid but have nothing to do with data centers, power, cooling, or compute.
I mean these concerns do, if AI doesn't have enough computing power then it can't take over the world and enslave the human race.

AI is going to end the careers of 20% of society and its going to enrich the wealth and productivity of 80% of society.
There is absolutely no way to know this. This is pure supposition. And therein lies the problem. It could end 1% of careers, or 50%. It could enrich us all, or only the top 1%, there's no way to know.

Anyone that believes their livelihood will not be deeply impacted by AI doesn't understand the power of AI.
I don't know anyone who thinks that their livelihood won't be impacted by AI. Quite the contrary, I think people understand all too well that it will be. But there's no way to know if it will be a net positive, or negative. Anyone who says they know which is just guessing.

Quite the conundrum for those on the right then...no? They would have to regulate AI to prevent the destruction of the human race, but then they would also have to intentionally support and acknowledge the need for some significant "big federal government regulations" on the AI companies.

I'm not a Republican, I'm a conservative-libertarian, also known as a classical liberal. Mental gymnastics do not work on me. My policy is simple: Your liberty is infinite until it impedes my liberty. Thus, a federal privacy law that prevents the sale and use of my PII does not seem anti-capitalist nor unreasonable.

I fight the corporatist and their lobbyists, not the libertine.

You're correct, there are loads of datacenters in the USA and I've been into many of them. What has changed is this: Starting in the mid-2000s, the kids started building video game PCs that used very powerful Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) that were to calculate and create images on the monitor as fast as humanly possible. The Central Processing Units (CPUs) were no longer the primary need for kids. Along comes bitcoin and the supporting blockchain technology and the "a-ha" moment came about, GPUs, dozens of graphics cards inside a PC/Server was able to rapidly process information with great ease. AI has taken that scenario and accelerated it 100-fold.

The datacenters that exist focused on holding 42-50 "servers" 1.6" thick per rack. Those servers had 8-16 CPUs and they created the reasonable power and cooling demands.

Today, the GPU intensive processing that we'll call "AI" demand for simplicity requires far, far more power and cooling per inch of server rack than any 5 year old data center was built to address. That means that a data center with 100 racks of servers can only handle perhaps 5-10 racks of modern, GPU heavy computing. Huge buildings, not enough power and cooling infrastructure.

Thus, everyone is trying to build new brick and mortar data centers from scratch that have the power capacity, generator backup capacity, and efficient water chillers to handle the cooling needs. It means we're basically starting from zero in a game where it takes 3-5 years to build the physical assets and the bureaucracy and public resistance is guaranteeing we are going to be late or fail to arrive at this major arms race.

It's a really dangerous time when the peasants have torches and pitchforks, unaware that if we lose this race they will literally be using pitchforks for a living.
There will be unintended pluses, too. It occurs to me that "efficient water chillers" development could benefit air-conditioning. A neighbor of mine used a home built wooden water tower/chiller in conjunction with an old Neuhoff meat cooler to accomplish a/c in his two story home in Dallas. Bill for electricity in the summer? $80 a month, tops. I would take that any day.

I do have concern for water usage out west where this is a real water dilemma.

Other issue with water is the data center cooling removes pure water and increases concentration of pollutants in the existing ground water. Rural areas with heavy farming already have issues with nitrates and contamination from early day farming.. this could make it much worse.
