Since you are a Marine, I am guessing you are well versed in its history. Double Medal of Honor recipient, General Smedley Darlington Butler became very critical of politics and the use of the military back in the day. I believe the book Butler wrote was called “War is a Racket.”

Interesting. I was just on vacation with a person from Greenland. She said Greenland is closing an airport in order to build a new military base. She was not sure for who, Greenland, Denmark or the USA or all of the above. (Side note, one less place to fly into for hunting in Greenland).

There seem to be a lot of leaders of other countries who are not treating it as posturing or Trump simply being bombastic. Stephen Miller did nothing to help it.

Well, what about Iceland? They’re going to feel inferior about Trump wanting to take over Greenland and not them? Anyway, I predict Venezuela will be the front candidate now for our 51st state. Sorry Canada and Panama, you just didn’t have “ the right stuff”. LOL

During the Cold War, the USAF had Sonderstrom and Thule air bases. My dad did several TDY assignments out of Sonderstrom, where the Air Force had tankers located. Sonderstrom is now the major international airport for Greenland and where the caribou and muskox hunters transit through.

Further north is Thule, which now goes by some indigenous name and is a US Space Force base.


Key Aspects of Sondrestrom/Kangerlussuaq:
History: Established as Bluie West-8 (a vital WWII stopover), it became Sondrestrom Air Base, closing in 1992, with its civilian airport (Kangerlussuaq Airport) taking over.
Location: Situated at the head of a long fjord (Søndre Strømfjord), making it a strategic spot for air traffic.
Economy & Tourism: Relies heavily on its airport (a former hub, now for large aircraft/military) and tourism, attracting visitors for its unique Arctic wildlife (muskoxen, caribou) and access to the ice cap.

A much better book about Butler is "The Plot to Seize the Whitehouse" by Jules Archer. I originally read it in the 1970s as it was a book on display in my high school library.

Butler was pretty disgusted and vocal with what he thought was the inappropriate use of the US military. He compared what he was asked to do as a Marine was not right and even compared himself to Al Capone. Interestingly, I'm not sure anything Butler did would fall under an "illegal order." Probably not. But the key thing is Butler didn't go quietly into retirement. He was very vocal and critical of things.

Sen Kelly, I believe, was concerned about where and how Trump / Hegseth were using the military and just reminded everyone how we roll. The message was for the so called "idiot privates" as well as the idiots in the Executive Branch.

I just finished watching “World War 2 in color” on Paramount. I’ve seen WW2 documentaries before, but this color version really brought out the surreal human carnage and destruction to a level that’s almost unimaginable. I don’t want to watch it again. Lest we forget.
