A Georgia man has been indicted on manslaughter charges in Alabama after a boat wreck during a professional fishing tournament in April killed three people and injured two others

I look forward to hearing the circumstances that lead to him not seeing the other boat on a perfectly clear day. They certainly won't use the cellphone defense.

It’s scary what can happen out on the water. When I was doing fish consumption surveys for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management years ago I was anchored up in a quiet backwater of the Coosa river doing my end of survey paperwork and a guy came blasting down the river and hit my boat head on. I abandoned ship but the guys prop caught my leg and cut me from knee to ankle!
I still get uncomfortable when I see a boat coming towards me.

Knowing nothing about this. What the hell was the guy doing? Didn’t seem like any reason to not avoid that boat.

Absolutely no excuse for this! He was probably looking at his electronics, GPS or tying on another lure or something. Actually I’m amazed it doesn’t happen more often, especially during tournaments. From 1992 through 1995 I spent 40 hours a week on lakes and rivers doing the above mentioned surveys and I saw so many close calls it was almost commonplace.
As noted a post or two ago an idiot finally caught up to me.

People get extra stupid in boats. I can't let the dog or nephews swim without keeping a constant eye out for boats too close to shore. When out fishing it's the same thing. Seen all manner of stupidity.

Yes, Smith lake. He also didn't have a boater certificate allowing him to operate a boat.

Not limited to Islam. History is replete with examples of Christians, in the name of religion, subjugating other cultures. The bloody story pretty much begins with Charlamagne's subjugation of the then pagan Saxons, then the Teutonic Knights subjugating the Baltics, the siege of Jerusalem in 1099 and the massacre of its Muslim and Jewish inhabitants during the First Crusade, the atrocities committed by Spanish Conquistadores in the Americas, and the brutal wars of faith between protestant and catholic among Christians themselves. I will admit. largely due to the collapse of religious commitment in the West, that modern day religious fervor is more likely to be Islamic. But they are hardly alone in history.

The Holy books of each faith give completely different commands on warfare and the conversion of people from other Faith's.

The Hebrews of the Old Testament were commanded very specifically who and why to fight against. The primary enemy of Israel were the Canaanites, or worshipers of Baal, Anat and those that attacked Israel, and took Hebrew slaves to use as human sacrifices to their Gods. Jews have always been Gods chosen to protect and preserve his Commandments, never to spread the faith by violent warfare.

Christians follow the New Testament where Christ sent his followers out a sheep among wolves. Never in Jesus teachings, or those of his Disciples, or the Apostles, can you find any command to violently convert anyone. As a matter of fact, Christian Disciples were instructed that any town that rejected Christ's teaching, you were to leave that town, and shake the dust off your feet from it.

Islam never makes the claim that Mohammed was peaceful, or that it doesn't encourage violence on those who will not submit to Islam. As others have posted above, Mohammed attempted to convert Jews, and then Christians to his new religion, and eventually became violent after they refused him.

What individuals of any Religion DO, is often not what the Scriptures of that particular faith teaches.

I encourage anyone that has an inquiring mind to actually read the major religious books of the World, instead of accepting what others tell you about them.

A couple of additional notes with respect to these numbers. Due to prisoner exchanges, both sides have been fairly open with each other about prisoners under their control. That would indicate that a large number of those listed as missing are actually additional KIA.

Secondly, and in keeping with observations of many of us in the West, Russian field medical support is truly appalling. A KIA to WIA ratio of 1 to 1.8, or if the MIA are included 1 to 1.3 is a medieval warfare statistic. In Afghanistan, the US KIA to WIA ratio averaged 1 to 9 throughout the conflict. You certainly have that correct. The blood soaked history of Christianity as its army's wrought "God's will" through the centuries bears clear testament. Even the Nazi Wehrmacht's belt buckle bore the inscription "Gott Mit Uns,"

Look, nowhere have I advocated for the admission of tens of thousands of Muslims into this country or anywhere in the West - particularly poor uneducated Muslims indoctrinated since birth in the more radically conservative elements of that faith. Not only will they not assimilate, but they are all too likely to violently reject the Western cultural norms of the communities in which they reside.

But that has nothing to do with the validity of Islam's perception of God - or Judaism or Zoroastrianism - not to mention Buddhism or Hinduism or a host of other attempts by man to understand his creator.

You are comfortable in your certainty of Christianity. I think that is lauditory. I have equal faith in a supreme being. I am far less certain man has it all figured out just yet.

Luke 22: 36 'He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."'

Also I am curious skydiver, is there a particular translation of the Judeo-Christian scriptures you recommend people study from? When I was young it was all St. James, but now I am older I am much more often turning to RSV or OAB.

Same... everything when I was a kid was King James edition...

These days I rely pretty heavily on an ESV with Macarthur apologetics or a CSB with apologetics notations.

the apologetics notations and excepts help me to put scripture into context and understand how they may tie in with other pieces of scripture and/or studies and assist in my internal "defense" of faith (how I rationalize, understand, and conceptualize my own personal faith, or would potentially express it and defend it to others)..

Excellent question and I can give a clear answer.

Most are confused by Scripture because the Bible has both literal and allegory. Much of what people believe is incorrect due to placing a literal meaning when it's actually an allegory, and thinking something is an allegory when it is literal.

Most have heard Matthew 17:20 concerning the faith of a mustard seed and being able to move mountains. Most believe this to mean we can use faith to move huge piles of stones by waving our little wand with a star on the end, as if the Bible is speaking of a literal mountain. In this context, a mountain is a KINGDOM, or City of people! Both the Old and New Testaments use this context, but it's almost universally misunderstood. What it means is to change the heart's of an entire people.

To answer your question directly, the word sword doesn't refer to a weapon made of bronze or iron, it refers to Scripture. Sell your cloak and buy the books of scripture, and this will be your defense. This is exactly what his Disciples and later Apostles did.

I prefer the King James, but the real key to understanding the Bible is the Strongs Bible Dictionary and having a basic understanding of Geography and Tribal names. For example, when the Ishmehalites, the Hittites, etc., are mentioned, most in the west will mentally skip over that section and move on. When I read the entire Bible when I was 19, and then learned the military history of the region, it was easy to tie the two together. The Hittite Kingdom refers to eastern Turkey, the Ishmehalites refers to Arabia and the Sinai. Once you understand ancient tribal and place names, wrapping your mind around what you are reading becomes much easier.
