Pelicase for 100x.470 rounds/ 5kg. weight

I am hoping that someone can help me from their experience.

I need to take SA either 100 .470 rounds (the maximum amount that I am allowed to possess) or as many .470 rounds as weigh 5kg/ 10lbs (the airline weight limit for ammunition).

Before spending tomorrow morning working out how many .470 rounds weigh 5kg, and then the size of that amount of ammunition, and then the size of the Pelicase into which I can fit that ammunition - has anyone done this before, and are you able just to give me the answer and tell me which Pelicase I need to buy?
 
I am doing this with .404J and ,375 ammo. I am figuring 2 boxes of each - 400 grain .404J and 300 grain .375 H&H in a Pelican case. This is 80 rounds - more than enough. Five kilograms = a bit over 11 lbs.

I do not remember the case model number, but it measures 9-1/4" X 8" X 4-1/2". The ammo fits comfortably in this case with very little space left over.

The case weighs 1 lb. 12.1 oz. empty. I do not know if the 5kg weight limit includes the weight of the case, or just the boxed ammo. I believe that this ammo will be close to the weight limit, but not exceed it.

I think he will have to go to the 1300 to get 5 boxes of .470. I can try it myself after church today possible. I have my 1300 packed with 2 boxes (vertically) of .450/.400 and three boxes of Barnes .300Win as we speak for the Zim/Tanzania safari.
5 boxes may put him over weight. It will be close.
 
I have the Pelican 1200. I used the factory ammo paperboard boxes, not aftermarket plastic boxes, to reduce weight and had 70 rounds of 30-28 Nosler and 40 rounds of 6.5x47 Lapua in the same type boxes. Put me right at 5 kilos. I doubt very much you'd get 100 rounds of the big stuff and make the weight with a 1200 case. Having said that, at United in Newark and in RSA, no one ever checked the weight of the ammo at check in. Arriving at Joburg, there was a TSA notice in my checked bag that they inspected the contents. My ammo box was left unlocked purposely and it was locked by them during the inspection. Whether or not they weighed it, I don't know.
 
Thank you everyone for your continuing interest. I apologise for asking a newbie's question, but this is my first time flying with ammunition (other than back in the '80s when I inadvertently passed through the Glasgow airport x-ray machine with an unnoticed Barbour pocket full of shotgun cartridges - brass and lead, you see, non-ferrous - and the late '90s, when it was acceptable to put bullets and rifle in the same case).

I have weighed a box of Kynoch (ie. 5 cartridges), and some simple mathematics tells me that I can get 15 boxes (75 rounds), with some spare weight left over. I'll probably be somewhere between 75 - 80 rounds. Tanks and Nevada Mike, you were both on the money!

Hogpatrol - I am flying from Heathrow, and they are weight Nazis there. I wonder whether I might be able surreptitiously to shuffle some rounds between my rifle case and my ammo case, between check-in at the airline desk and the customs poking around. Doubtful - there's always some bugger watching you.

Do you need to padlock both holes in the Pelicase, or can you gat away with just one?

Incidentally, current prices in the UK for .470 ammunition are £15/ $18 per round (Kynoch) and £5/ $6 for brass.

I am at 4.9 kg with 40 rounds of 200 grains .300 RUM and 45 rounds of 570 grain .500 NE. So, I am sure 100 rounds of .470 rounds of 500 grain bullets would be over the limit. I'd guess 80 rounds max.

For $11 the following is a good investment for travelers. I put all the ammo in a plastic grocery bag and weigh it.

I keep one of these luggage scales handy for all my packing. with all the rules and baggage fees these days its a must.

And always pack a little light. The airline scales are not set up to save YOU money!
