Doing safari to EC soon and was wondering what the more experienced ah community feels is best when it comes to overnighting in joberg, safety being of upmost concern.

If you don’t want to leave the airport City Lodge is good. If you want a bed and breakfast Afton Safari lodge is excellent as well. I can’t remember the other B&B option but have heard it I excellent as well but have no first hand knowledge of it. Hire a meet and greet to deliver you with no worries at all.

Easy! Stay at AFton house or one of the other excellent safari "guest" houses. They met us at the airport and brought us directly to the Afton house, which like most houses in Jberg, are very secure. Get the steak dinner and settle back for a very relaxing stay. Some of the best money we spent on the trip. Even better, after our flight on United was cancelled in April, they found room for us on short notice and did it all over again, And arranged a day driving tour of the city and Soweto. We enjoyed great conversation with the other travelers, enjoyed their nice quality collection of souvenirs and the trophy room, they have a nice pool to use and outdoor garden area to relax in. For such a huge city, and how spooky the drive to the Afton was from the airport at night, it was incredibly quiet.

We use Africa Sky. They are outstanding. They will handle you permits, VIP meet and greet, 5 star dining and amazing ambience. A little bit of old Africa 10 minutes from the airport.

As others have already mentioned, both the Afton Safari Lodge and the Africa Sky are excellent recommendations for an overnight guesthouse stay in Jo'burg. Both provide a meet & greet service and ground transfer that is included in your room cost. They will meet you at the receiving atrium in the main terminal right outside of baggage claim and transport you to the guesthouses both which are just a few minutes away from the airport.

I stayed at Africa Sky on both my trips. Highly recommend them. As @WAB and firehuntfish stated their meet and greet at the airport is great. Their assistance in getting your guns from SAPS, the food, nice rooms, getting you back to the airport are all top notch.

Have your PH pick you up at the airport and drive directly to your safari camp! ('Have done this on every safari within or close to RSA, including S. Zim.) Please tell Eric Clapton I said Hi!

+1 on Africa Sky. Excellent service and meals for our group including airport VIP meet and greet and rifle permits. Just a nice friendly place.

Would love to but there is another flight to reach this part of South Africa- not sure if it’s possible seems like a really long drive

Plenty of airports within a few minutes of the airport. We stayed at one called Premier Hotel OR Tombo. Shuttle picked us up right outside baggage area, 8 pm at night and took about 8 min to arrive at the hotel.
Reasonable priced at $80 night, with nice restaurant and bar.
We easily caught a 6 am shuttle back to AP in the morning for our flight to East London.

Just got back. I have previously stayed at the President's Lodge. Great hosts, security and clean with good food. 10 mins from Airport. This time because of time restraints we stayed at City Lodge right across from the terminals. We were met by Marius and his wife with Henry Rifle Permits and after we got our guns they escorted us to City Lodge. Beautiful place, very clean and secure. Will stay there again. We got in late but wanted to have a nightcap and cigar. Sat out by the pool and bought beer for the great nephew and they even brought ice and glasses for our own bottle of Scotch.

I'm sensing more and more PHs that do not wish to drive to pick clients up at the airport (which, of course is a shame.) IF I got one to drive me to S. Zimbabwe, (and for that matter one that would pick us up in Harare and drive us to SE Zimbabwe) there are drivers out there for you! Many PHs subcontract a driver. I happen to like seeing a country rather than flying over it and unnecessarily wasting time in Airports (which can be 5 hrs total on both ends!) I see it's 9 hrs one-way to the E. Cape from JHB (while it's "only" 6 hrs to the S. SA border with Zim.) As my flight arrived very late, we opted to stay at a really nice safari camp of the PHs friend overnight, drove across the border (after hunting PG in SA for the a.m.) and hunted Zim the next afternoon! At least I (and my guns/gear) were far away from the Airport!!! Good luck. And let me guess, there's no connecting flight (such that you are otherwise forced to stay at one of the nearby places?)

Easiest and most practical for not leaving airport is city lodge. Decent dining and reasonable pricingm

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
