Overbuilt Optics

Thank you for the replies.

I guess my definition of “overbuilt” in this instance is lines intended to be a statement for the brand. Like the Ruger RSM vs the standard Model 77.

I have used old Tascos that were far better than what most people think a Tasco will be. The Redfield scopes at the end of US production and the beginning of Japanese were quite good. Old Khales and Swarovski I have looked through had no warts either. At the time the Leupold LPS was made it probably should have been a 2k scope but was less than $1,000 if I recall.

The old K4 Weavers that were made in El Paso age pretty well. Admittedly they'll give up a few minutes each day, but for the most part will still hold their own at reasonable hunting distances.

I used The Weaver 4K on a 30/06 for many years. Never let me down.
These days 4 power seems underpowered except on big game.
Old age is a curse!☹️

Another thing to consider to being overbuilt is the reputation for customer service of the optic company.
Yes, being overbuilt will prevent having a problem most times.
However, when things really go to pot and you need factory level repairs...
Companies like Swarovski with their excellent service come to mind.
Other companies leave much to be desired in this area.

I've had good experiences with Trijicon and Vortex and their customer service.
All of which had no out of pocket expenses other than shipping to them.

Not to mention there's no law prohibiting hunting through night in moonlight where I live. I find red dot on scope most useful in daylight, provided the dot is bright enough. Crosshair is more precise but the dot is much more intuitive and faster to use.

To the original subject, it's interesting to see S&B make tactical / hunting siblings of same optical design. PMII Ultra Bright is basically Polar T96 series, PMII 3-21 = Exos 3-21 and so on. And the hunting versions are not delicate butterflies either..

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
