This dude was quartering just slightly more to his right and got it in the green. About 25 yds. 416 rem. Luangwa Valley. 2019. Only got to shoot once at this one

Damnation, I hate being colorblind. All ii can see is the white dot and that's not the shot I would take!!

It’s a good idea to make a target the shape and size of the frontal kill zone. And practice that shot.

It’s a relatively large target.

You may walk a lot of miles for one good frontal shot. You don’t always get a bull standing broadside in the wide open. You would kick yourself for years for not being prepared to make this shot on this caliber of bull.

Frontals are very effective and quick kills.
I have a hunt coming up (slowly) in 2028 and have been trying to decide on exactly what you are proposing for practice. For us inexperienced folk, how big is the frontal target and how big are the vitals on a well-placed broadside shot? TIA

Practice accurate shooting at various distances. Put the bullet where intended with unfailing consistancy...and don't worry about "where" to shoot your Buff.
Your PH will tell you exactly when...and exactly WHERE to shoot.
If you are proficient with your rifle, and capable of hitting the spot he directs you to...no worries.
Best of African Luck

Buy Kevin Robertson's perfect shot book, you should be able to find one for roughly $15 if you search around

Not saying it doesn’t happen, but I have never had a PH tell me where to shoot a buffalo. One told me where to shoot an eland once and that was an eff up. I knew better, but we got him eventually.

The one bit of advice I could add is ask your PH what kind of sticks he will be using and the distance to practice. I shot a bunch of plains game off of the tripod version and it was good but never rock steady.
My PH used quad sticks when I came back for buffalo a couple of years ago. They were fantastic! I mean X-ring fantastic. My PH did call for shot placement on the buff and the TSX went through both lungs and the atria of the heart. The buffalo went straight down and never got up.

The old advice still holds. Listen to your PH. He's seen more buffalo shot in a season than most of us will shoot in a lifetime.

The PH said to be 1” high at 100 yards for my rifle but didn’t/hasn’t given me a practice range. I have been shooting 50-75 yards with my 416 REM and can put 3-5 shots in a 2” circle using a rest or a fence post with a RMR red dot sight. I have built a set of the tripod sticks to practice off of as well. A Cape Buffalo has been a dream for 40+ years and I plan on being ready. Thank you for your (or any more) advice you can give. TIA

Get at least 40 yards closer. Thats where buffalo should be shot.

Tell your PH. He can’t read your mind. I tell my guys that I like to shoot buffalo at 30 yards, with a little humor but enough directness to know that I’m serious. So far 35 yards has been the max. You’ll possibly have to pass up shots to do that, so that’s something you need to decide beforehand. I’ve gone home without a buffalo once, as well. Was hunting with Jr., so it was fine.

Thank you for the kind words.

I've found practice shots off the sticks were very valuable, not just for accuracy, but to smoothly and quickly place the rifle properly on the sticks and the sights on target.

The advice of sighting +1 in. @ 100yds seems more like plains game preparation to me. To my understanding most buffalo are shot at 50yds or less.

My PH said to sight in "right on" at 100 yds with my .375 H&H with 350 gr TSXs. He planed to get closer than 50yds so there is little risk of an significantly errant shot. As Flipper Dude suggested, another conversation with your PH before you leave might be helpful.

Good Luck with your hunt!

Of all the game animals I have hunted, the only three that required follow up shots were frontal shots.

I am not sure what it is with me and that angle, but I had rather wait. On the shot presented, I am not shooting. I am waiting for another opportunity 95% of the time.

Outside of my biased personal experiences, red (ish).

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
