Just for reference, if bullets from your favorite buffalo rifle are leaving the muzzle somewhere around 2400 fps and you sight in at 100 yards, your rifle will (by coincidence) be almost exactly zeroed at 50 yards. The recommendation to sight-in at 100 yards is therefore excellent advice.
Between 10 and 130 yards you will be no more than 1" high and no more than 1" low. Good enough for buffalo hunting, says I.
At all practical DG ranges, you simply put the crosshairs where you want the bullet to go and pull the trigger. A few rifles suitable for hunting buffalo might shoot below 2000 fps or above 2700 fps. The ballistics are bit different for those..... but not that much, reality.
