Their Mannlicher builds are beautiful. Their double shotgun offerings were truly exquisite as well.

What’s wrong with leather pads?
They were designed by British gunmakers to allow pairs of shotguns to be quickly mounted in a driven bird shoot without snagging on clothing. Heavy caliber double rifles were typically equipped with a simple hard rubber pad to protect the butt and to foster secure shoulder weld through recoil for a fast and accurate second shot. Practically, a thin piece of pig or goatskin over a hard rubber pad, in addition to defeating the purpose of a pad on a rifle, also simply would not hold up well on the extended safaris of the day.

Americans eventually took over the market with more money than understanding or taste and started adding leather covered pads to their custom rifles. Since most would only be used a few times in a lifetime it really doesn't matter - unless of course that butt slides during a buffalo or tusker charge.

Not to mention what happens to leather if it gets wet repeatedly?

Nothing wrong with a leather covered recoil pad. :D

By the way, beautiful 375!

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
