Hello folks, I'm considering a Montana Rifle Company action for a build. I've seen a few rifles in 375H&H for reasonable prices lately and I'm thinking maybe I should use that as a donor action for a build. I'm not too familiar with their actions. I'd appreciate any thoughts this community has on them. Especially when considering it against some other donor action possibilities such as a Model 70, CZ 550, and/or Dakota 76 instead.

Decide who you are using to build the rifle and ask him what action he likes to use. Some smiths have lots of experience with one, but not another. Thus, they have preferences. All of those actions can produce a solid functional rifle.

What caliber are you trying to build. I have one in MRC THAT CAN be built as 505 gibbs and a action in cz 550 safari magnum in 375 bolt face another in 416 Rigby bolt face. They are all NEW from the factory.

I suppose the big issue for me is being left handed. So whenever I see a left hand big-bore action or rifle I try to buy it as long as the cost is reasonable (they usually aren't). I was thinking a 500A-square, 510 Wells, or a 550 magnum for a build. Or perhaps a Rigby-sized bolt face. I believe others have mentioned on here that a 375H&H bolt face should be suitable to open up to the diameter needed for one of those. But a 505 Gibbs would require a larger bolt face.

I am a LH shooter as well, so I considered these rifles as well. The MRC action is investment cast (like the Ruger bolt guns) this is proven technology but not the usual practice. I do not care for the bolt release design. I opted to build several rifles on Win M70 and Dakota 76 actions, which I think are more attractive.

That said I have heard no complaints about the MRC actions.

I really like their actions. Built well and cycles very smoothly. I have a few Dakota 76’s and I think they are very similar in feel to my Montana. Dakota is more of a Mauser feel. It would make for a great donor action.
