Mauser 9.3x62 caliber rifle re-loading

A rib shot with any bullet might destroy meat, especially in the ribs, themselves, however it is the rapidly expanding bullets that will destroy the shoulder meat, from a rib shot. Chief among these that I have seen are the Berger "hunting bullets"(recently).

Gert, Barne’s makes 250gr TTSX, 250gr TSX and 286gr TSX in 9.3mm. My son has cleanly taken Kudu, Wildebeest, Zebra and others with 250gr TTSX and I have taken Moose and Black Bear with 250gr TTSX bullets in our 9.3X62 rifles.

Yes, I have seen the heaviest is the 286 TSX ..that will be my go to bullet when hunting next season at a moderate muzzle velocity of 2450f/s in a bush-veld environment..walk/stalk hunting

Note that if you have compressed loads with jacketed lead bullets, the Barnes will compress even more, as they are longer for weight.

That's why I went with the Swift A-Frames in the 9.3. I normally use Barnes.

When changing components of a load, should start your load data anew, and progress upwards as pressure signs indicate.
Different bullets change the pressure and velocity profile as well as accuracy. At least reduce the load by 3 or 4 grs. and start there.
The Barnes TSX and TTSX are longer than normal cup and lead core bullets for the same weight.

Hi Gert, nice looking rifles.

What powders are availbale to you, or are you stuck with only Somchem. CFE223 and Ramshot Big Game work very well with the 250 grain range of bullets. Sixty to sixty two grains should get you 2,500fps or 763m/s plus. 55-56 grains of IMR3031 should get you around 2450fps or 747m/s. For lighter bullets H4895 works well and for heavier bullets 286-325 grain I like RL17.

Currently I am using 258 grain Hammer bullets with 60.5gr of CFE223, R 9-1/2 @ 3.305” o.a.l. and am getting around 2490fps for best accuracy. 63.0grains of CFE223 gets me to 2580fps.

Is there any particular bullet that you are interested in?
What are your overall length restrictions, magazine?
Have you finished your 8x68s?
@dchamp
I'm using 64.5 gn of CFE 223 behind a 250 in my Whelen for 2,700 fps. The 9.3x62 should easily duplicate this.
Bob

I agree Bob. Then increased capacity of the 9.3x62 over the Whelen should actually not only.meet that 2,700fps with that weight bullet, but exceed it by 100fps.
Of course we all know 100fps is really nothing, but that’s 300fps over the 2 500fps noted anf that is something, if only longer effective range.

Hello Gert! Greetings from Canada! Congratulations on a wonderful rifle and cartridge! Yours is a truly beautiful rifle.

One word of advice as an avid user of the 9.3x62 and a fan of Barnes TSX bullets - choosing heaviest for caliber is a good idea for typical cup and core bullets, but for Barnes copper bullets (and many other pure copper / monumental bullets) performance is improved by using somewhat lighter bullets.

The all copper bullets are less dense than traditional bullets, which means they must be seated deeper in the case, robbing powder capacity. You would therefore choose a lighter bullet to achieve desired velocity.

Plus the all-copper hollow points must be driven faster than traditional lead core bullets to expand properly and give effective "shock" to the game. With all-copper, there is no concern about bullet break up and shallow penetration as is common with light weight jacketed / lead core bullets.

Both characteristics require you to choose a lighter bullet than traditional bullets.

Darn auto-correct! that should read "monometal" not "monumental!" :giggle:

Looking at the BARNES 250gn bullets ??? Your opinion ? It make sense how you think about this Longwalker, thank you kindly for your advice and opinion, it is much appreciated.

My concern being the faster you shoot a bullet the more chance of meat damage ????
I would like to maintain a f/s around 2350f/s in a bushveld walk/stalk hunt...short distances at 100 meters to 150 meters open sights.

The 300 gr aframes would work great. I used them in my 9.3x74 double on an eland and through both shoulders and very little meat damage. I regulated a 2360fps

Gert 160gr TTSX will take care of any PG and 2500 -2600 fps should be relativly easy obtained. I use CFE223. Ramshot's Big Game would be another good powder for that bullet weight.

If you want to go heavy try Norma’s 325gr Oryx. I use RL-17 and have had it up to 2330fps but found my best accuracy at 2277fps. It’s good out to around 200yds.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.

Hi Paul,
This is Daniel from Mankazana Safaris.

I saw your post regarding a hunt in Africa. I am sure you have been bombarded with messages and replies from other outfitters, so I will keep this one quick.
I have a feeling we have exactly what you need for a first safari.
