Mauser 9.3x62 caliber rifle re-loading

Gorgeous rifle. Exactly what I am looking for!

Bummer, Moz will not allow anything less than a 9.3x62 to hunt a leopard so it was either my 375 H&H or 9.3x62 and I much prefer the latter. I wanted to take my Rigby 275 Rigby but not allowed

@Rare Breed What bullet are you using?
These bullets are the old version of Peregrine bullets...I still am looking for a suitable bullet for hunting. I think the answer is a BARNES bullet ..I will make a choice before next year hunting season..Rhino bullets here in SA is another possibility.

I took the 9.3 x62 to the shooting range, my children love shooting so whenever there is an opportunity to do some shooting we use it..This is where we are forming our opinions about the different calibers and their performances.
I took the 9.3x62, .577/450 Martini Henry , SAKO .300WM and the Mauser 8x57 JS to the range....the Mauser .22LR did an excellent job to teach marksmanship to the women in our group at the range. Rifles are instruments that makes life worthwhile , beautiful rifles even more so..creating memories in my family. We had a great day....

@Rare Breed The speer 270's will work great on Leopard. The other bullet that will work well is the Accubond's. I push them at 2655 ish in my x62. I have safe loads in my rifle that are a bit over 2700 but the groups open up a bit more than I would like.

Can you please elaborate - fire form into my Mauser chamber? Are you referring to fire form the brass?

I suppose a soft bullet is desired for cats. This was noted many decades ago, on the .375H&H for lion.
The 270gr. Speer bullet broke up on the front leg bone of a calf moose for me and didn't make it out of the leg, through the ribs and into the cavity. The initial vel. was 2,300fps from my 9.3x57. The moose (maybe 240lbs) was 200yards away by laser rangefinder. The impact vel. might have been 1,800fps. The leg bone up near the top, on that animal is a good 2" in diameter, just saying. I would never use those bullets in my 9.3x62s.
For all-round bullets for the 9.3x62, I think it had to out-perform the Norma Oryx line. We load the 286gr. Norma Alaskan now in the 9.3x57 for my brother, at 2,200fps. That is now his moose rifle.

SStomcat, PMP brass cases I used is used for the first time in the 9.3x62 chamber, although it was full length sized it still fired-form to the dimensions of the rifle`s chamber... I am now trying to re-load more accurate using a bullet comparator and headspace gauge trying to setup the full length sizing die as accurate as possible ..

Once you fireform your brass, would you please measure the shoulder diameter. If you google the 9.3x62 dimensions, you will receive a chart showing the shoulder is .451". This is incorrect according to brass I have from a Styer Rifle and Sako brass as well as from my 2 factory chambered 9.3x62, one Mauser, the other is a Zastava. All three of these guns, show .454" shoulders on fireformed brass. .454" is the standard for the old "standard" IMP ctg. invented or originated by Parker O. Ackley on that case as well as the the other .468-.470" standard parent cases. Measured case water capacity of those fired 9.3x62 Sako cases is exactly the same as my 9.3x62 brass, at 78gr. capacity.

Hi Gert, nice looking rifles.

What powders are availbale to you, or are you stuck with only Somchem. CFE223 and Ramshot Big Game work very well with the 250 grain range of bullets. Sixty to sixty two grains should get you 2,500fps or 763m/s plus. 55-56 grains of IMR3031 should get you around 2450fps or 747m/s. For lighter bullets H4895 works well and for heavier bullets 286-325 grain I like RL17.

Currently I am using 258 grain Hammer bullets with 60.5gr of CFE223, R 9-1/2 @ 3.305” o.a.l. and am getting around 2490fps for best accuracy. 63.0grains of CFE223 gets me to 2580fps.

Is there any particular bullet that you are interested in?
What are your overall length restrictions, magazine?
Have you finished your 8x68s?

If you are happy with those ballistics, that's just great. They are no where near what this ctg. is capable of and do not approach even "modern" loads in the .35 Whelen, which has 6gr. LESS case capacity.

As long as I’m getting upwards of 2400 fps and my groups at 100 yards are 1.5 to 2 MOA I don’t fret it out. The target animal with a well placed shot won’t complain or feel the difference :)

Daryl, thank you for this information. I will give feedback in this regards. I am using the PMP brass cases , will measure water capacity as well of the fired cases before de-priming again.

dchamp, we do have access to imported propellant. I use SONCHEM currently , I do have SONCHEM propellant available. Will look at various propellants in the near future.
I do not have a preference in regards to bullets. I will be looking at Rhino, AXE and Stewart`s bullets for range shooting .
When hunting next season I surely will use BARNES bullets...it maybe expensive due to our weak Rand currency but definitely cheaper than wounding a blue wildebees or kudu using inferior bullets to hunt with.

250 grains Barnes TTSX at 2500 fps is devastating on Kudu, Eland bull, Warthog, and pretty much any PG.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
