Long time reader, first time poster.

Today i noticed that the crossbolts on my M70 is loose.
Actually, i could loosen them with the top of my finger..btw, new gun.

Anyway, oddly enougt, i didnt have the right size allen key.

So, my questions are, what size allen key and how much should i tighten them? I would guess maybe like the stockbolts or a little less.

Kind regards. And also, english is not my first language so i do apologize if the grammar is a bit of.

I can’t help with the size, but just gave mine a good turn with the small Allen key. I put some blue loctite on the threads.

No biggie, just funny that i dont have the correct size. Suspect it might be metric, but the stock screws are not..

Anyway, i emailed Browning about it, just to let them know more then anything else i quess.

First of all welcome to AH. Where are you from? Secondly, don't worry about your grammar. Did Browning by chance give you a torque speck? Crossbolts are not ornamental, I suspect they need to be reasonably tight. Have you done much looking online for an answer? Because I don't know the answer and may benefit from knowing it I'm going to do a little looking. If I find anything I'll let you know.

Lakebranch338, so far I've only found one torque setting for crossbolts. It was for a Ruger rifle and may or may not be helpful. Surprisingly it is only 20 inch pounds.

Thank you. Im Swedish.

No reply yeth from Browning, i quess it will come next week.
I have looked online but no answer i found satisfactory. Honestly, i dont think its a really big deal. Just keep them reasonably thight but not to thight.

I will post Brownings answer.

I’ll check for you tonight

Welcome to the party. Tell us a little about your hunting career, what guns you have / like and have you been to Africa.

Welcome to the dark side, I'm sure someone here will have or find the answer for you.

On my 416 Rem 2014 Made in Utah, assembled in Portugal rifle the action screws are 5/32 and the crossbolts are 7/64

Never been to Africa, hope to one day though. Mostly i enjoy hunting wildboar, but anything goes..

As for guns, i for the most part enjoy classic guns and calibers.
To mention some of the guns i own or have owned is several Sako 75 and 85. Finnbear. A R8. A couple of M70. Several FN M98 Husqvarnas, MS 1950, Swedish Mauser 96s, Browning 425 and 725, FN A5, 870, Berettas.. and lots more.

Calibers i seem to come back to time and again are 30-06, 9,3x62 and maybe suprisingly 338 Win Mag.

Also i find reloading enjoyable.

Lakebranch338, I think you are going to enjoy being an AH member. Lots of knowledgeable folks that are willing to share what they know. I own several of the same rifles you do i.e. Sako Finnbear, M70(s) and 1896 Swedish Mausers. I reload all of my rifle and pistol ammo.

.338 magnums are some of my favorite rounds. I hope to add a 9.3x62 soon.

Just the same as the torque on the Ruger crossbolts I mentioned earlier. Good info to know.

Well, Browning replyed now not to torque them over 20 inch pounds.

That is no a lot..

I suppose crossbolts are not like action screws and the load on them is independent of torque. You could perhaps put an unsecured bolt through and it still would disperse the load of the shot as long as it stayed in.

Yes perhaps. I was thinking, these modern rifles that have cross bolts, i have yet to see one that the recoil lug bear against the cross bolt like it did on yesterdays rifles.

This is due to beddig of course, but what the heck is the bolts then there for?

My quess is that a cross bolt that actually makes contact with the recoil lug need more torque.

Maxiumum 20 inch pounds makes them more ornamental then anything else, i guess..

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
