I recently had a stock made for a Ruger No.1 by Treebone carving. I thought that I’d be able to do the final fitting, but upon receiving the stock I’ve realized that I bit off more than I can chew.

Does anyone know of anyone who does final fitting on stocks, preferably near Charleston SC? Local search has only brought up guys that focus on ARs, laser engraving, etc.

Have you seen Evan Koch's work? He's out of Minnesota, but does some absolutely fantastic work! Not sure if you're on Instagram, but he has plenty of his work posted there.

You could probably fit it yourself. Unless time is a factor. A set of good wood chisels, the key is to keep them sharp!. Look up Jim Kibler on YouTube. Yes he builds muzzleloaders. But the fitting process is the same. I have 3 treebone stocks to fit on my rolling blocks. They are beautiful wood stocks! I hope this helps.

If you reconsider DIY, get or make a good set of scrapers, and use them more than chisels as you get close. Prussian blue on metal shows exactly where on the wood contact is being made.

Thanks. I looked up his stuff and he seems to do good work

Yeah I’m just concerned about messing it up. I was planning on doing it myself until I saw how much material needed to be removed

Well, you just remove everything that doesn't look like a perfect rifle stock...lol

Rasp, course file, medium file and fine file. Same with sandpaper.

I put the buttplate on and with a pencil trace around it and work the wood down to that with files then sanding.

David’s Custom Gun Stocks in North GA. Google him. He did a great job on one of my Rigbys

Hi PaulB. Would you be interested in another WJ Jeffery .450/.400 NE 3". It's an extractor model and in superb condition, cased as well. Made in 1908. The rifle is here in Texas.
