Congratulations on a fine European double. Please do yourself the favour and slug the barrels to confirm the “J” calibre, or iow .318”. Bullets are harder to find, but Woodleigh and Bertram definitely make. I’m sure there must be a maker in the states as well.

You are quite right, it does read Bernhard Merkel.
I found an article where this maker is mentioned:

Same Merkel family, but another brother or cousin, specialising only in "best hunting rifles and guns". I do not know what you paid for it, but likely it was priced as just another generic Merkel rifle, while this is in its own category all together. Very nice find indeed!

Wow.....very nice!!! I wish I could get one of those to follow me home.......without coaxing it with lots of money.
The girlgriend?

No wife and girlfriend doesn't need to know!:ROFLMAO:
@wvfred
Mate I can't even get a stray dog to follow me home even if I'm holding a t-bone steak for it.
What happens when said girlfriend finds ot you have it tho.
I'm looking after it for a friend excuse only works so many times before they wake up to it.
You could try, the gun shop let me bring it home to try and if I like it I can b

I'm lucky she doesn't question what I do with my money and I don't question her spending. I also don't bring up what I pay for some of my guns...she may have me committed if she knew what I paid for my H&H 500/450.....lol

A guy I used to compete with painted all his rifles the same colour. For years his wife though he only had one rifle until one day when he forgot to close the gun safe and his wife saw how many rifles were in there.

More like ... she pretended not to know and then amused herself by winding him up when he made that slip:ROFLMAO:!

Beautiful! Congratulations!

I need to know if this is legit. Photo with today's paper would do it.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
