This is just a question about traveling with your ammunition. What do you use for a lockable container for the ammunition?

I use these sold by TuffPak, and have had no problem with them. I always travel with a TuffPak 1050 for my firearms, and these all fit down in the case. Of note, the medium will fit standard to "magnum" length (270 Win, 30-06 Spg, 338 WinMag, 300 Win Mag, etc.) cartridge boxes, but you'll need the large size for the ultra-mag, safari length, etc. cartridges.

I don't think you would have to buy this brand per say, but something similar (i.e., Pelican, etc.) depending on the price you found. I only bough this brand because it was there as an accessory when I originally ordered the TuffPak 1050, the price was comparable to other roto-molded cases, and I could save on shipping. This is what has worked for me, but I'm sure there are other solutions out there...........

I use a Pelican 1450, which is a bit big, but I can put other things into it, and because I have to check it separately (in Africa), a slightly larger case is less likely to get lost. Or so I hope.

I use a metal one sold by Cabelas that matches my rifle case. It hold six boxes of standard or magnum loads with no problem.

+1 for the tuffpak ammo case. Big enough to carry more than I need, small enough to fit in my other luggage, and tough enough to be fine if it has to travel separately.

These days I try and buy for a lifetime. And with tuffpak I believe I have done that.

Mr cheapskate bought a Staples Cash box $20 fits 60 7mm mag or 80 300wsm. Fits in my checked with the clothing

But did you over think before you bought it??? That's the important part of all this you know, the over thinking that most of us do. :)

I'm guilty as hell of overthinking stuff but I'm working on correcting it.

I picked up a MTM Ammo Dry Box from Midway. It fits 3 large plastic shell holders. I ended up placing a piece of foam inside to hold them from rattling around.

I only wonder when I get to SA and fly out of Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth or when I come home if they'll ask me to check it separately. I hope not at least on my trip down there just so that I have my ammo for my hunt.

Pelican box for us. The nice thing is we put more fragile items we bought to bring home in them after "shooting" all the ammo.
They did have us remove them and ship separate(at no cost) when we went from Cape Town to PE. We had them in the checked baggage for the trip home from PE to Jberg then to Washington DC/San Francisco.

Thanks for the replies. I've had my Tuffpak for quite a while and did'nt know they had ammo boxes. I think I'll just order a couple of the large ones. If they last and wear as well as the rifle case, I'll be a happy camper. Again thanks for the help.

If you love your tuffpak you will love the ammo box too. The picture is the large box with 3 boxes of .30/06 and two boxes of .375 H&H. It comes with a piece of foam for the top that makes it nice and snug.

If you need to take more ammo than that check out what Brickburn did in this other thread with a similar pelican box. One of these days I will probably get around to doing that, but I haven't yet.

I think I've got you beat. I bought a kid's (Shrek) plastic lunch box for under $10 at Wally World. I drilled a hole in the overlapping top and bottom edges so I can lock it with a TSA lock. It will hold 3 MTM or Frankford Arsenal plastic 20 round magnum ammo cases. Its been to Africa 3 times and once to New Zealand.

For my New Zealand trip last year I wanted to split my ammo with half in my luggage and half in my GFs. I found a water tight clear orange plastic box in the camping department at Wally World that will hold 2 FA magnum ammo cases, also for under $10. I pop-riveted a hasp on it for a TSA lock. Half of my ammo went in that box and the other half went in Shrek.

Would you by chance share some of my Scottish heritage?

Go to Cabela's. Buy the smaller size, green plastic ammo box which is set up to take a lock = on sale $8. Go to Wal-mart. Cheap (oops, I mean inexpensive) padlock = $2.

Total = $10

Don't overanalyze this stuff, as is so correctly noted above.
