Does any one have any advice on sat comms? looking at an inreach for a Greenland hunt.
nothing fancy just be able to text with the family. Any advice on devices or plans would be greatly
appreciated!

I have the inreach. just the size larger, have used it for about 8 years now. If you pair it with your smartphone, you can text much quicker and can use map functions also. Most trips now I don't need it as there is cell phone service lots of places that didn't use to. Great for texting your family and keeping in touch, and not very expensive. Some plans just $14 a month or so. They have eliminated some of the recurring fees so more affordable than they used to be. If you don't spend too much on the initial cost you can let it sit between hunts when not needed. Probably a good choice if you travel a fair amount.

My inreach mini has been fantastic in Africa to the point my ph picked up one after I left

I took a Garmin Messenger to Alaska last month. Paired with my phone made for reliable, easy texting. Plan runs about $15 per month but can be suspended if not using it regularly.

Yes Sir, I have the in-reach mini and have used it around the world (literally) from Antarctica, Alaska, Namibia and the Caribbean.
I have the "Recreation" plan that is 24.99 a month and do not think it is still available. I believe Garmin has changed their plans. The new "Standard Plan" is running about 29.99 but you get more text than I do under the old plan. There is also a couple less expensive plans if you won't require that much texting...

I’ve used my inreach mini in Zim and Argentina.

It’s perfect for quick text to family. I don’t think there is anything more cost effective.

Inreach mini is really awesome, used it on 3 trips and really like it.

Isn’t that a good bit bigger than the inreach? Last time I looked the roam fit in a backpack the inreach in a pocket. One of for fill internet the other for satellite texting.
It certainly is bigger. But it also does more.

InReach SE here - take it everywhere. I can take it and a small Anker battery and literally text from anywhere - no generator needed.

I use a Garmin Alpha 300i for dog training and tracking, and it has InReach messenger. Being a full sized unit it gets signal in seconds and has a great battery life. I don’t even bother pairing it with my phone to send messages, so Bluetooth isn’t draining my phone battery when I’m in the backcountry. I’ve found it can get satellite reception in places the inReach mini or my Spot device I used previously couldn’t without quite a delay. The Alpha is a niche product, but in general if you aren’t trying to save ounces, or you’ll be under tree cover, maybe consider a larger unit. I use the cheapest monthly plan. If I go over my usage limit it’s a small charge per message.

The Garmin Inreach is so affordable. It’s almost negligent to travel to remote areas without one. The plan can be suspended when not in use. So you need only pay for one month of service. If you like.

I've used an inReach a number of times in Newfoundland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Alaska, and all over the US for hunting and hiking trips. They did go to a required monthly plan (used to pay like $30/yr and be able to freeze your account and activate month by. month) which I think is like $15/mo for a handful of included texts. I don't really use it frequently, so this works well for me. I usually have wifi in camp (now with Starlink being so popular/available) and only have it for emergencies when away from camp for my family to keep in touch. Great piece of mind, and a decent GPS function along with it.

I’ve used the inreach mini in Zimbabwe, Wyoming, Colorado and Canada. Works perfectly paired with a phone. I don’t find the need to use a larger unit unless I wasn’t going to bring my phone.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
