We all know, mono bullets of lighter weight will penetrate the same as a heavier lead bullet, because they don't shed weight. But 250/260 grains, I believe is more to satisfy velocity nuts.

So, I did some calculations. Barnes bullets generally gain .001 in BC for every grain of bullet weight. So using the 270 LRX as a base, the 285 would have a BC of .464.

In my 23" .375 Ruger, I can push a 300gr to 2700 (not needed though), so I estimated the 285 at 2650 with a 150 zero.

50yd- 2552 +0.37"
100yd- 2457 +0.90"
150yd- 2364 0.00"
200yd- 2273 -2.46"

Ok, so maybe I got bored. I still think it's a good idea.

Hi
I am using for my clients and me 256 gr in french mono GPA in 375 HH it really work well.

Have you looked at Hammer Bullets? They appear to have several offerings in the 250 to 300 grain .375" bullets. Also recommended twist rate of barrels for their bullets.

Why slower for the 285 than the 300?

Also, seems the LRX should meet the need.
Well, I actually load my 300 grain to 2600. I was just using the modest velocity to show how well it would fly.

The LRX is made to expand down to 1600 I believe. So at 50 yards I would think it would lose its petals, but I may be wrong.

Barnes has been responsive when I’ve emailed them. I’d ask what is the maximum recommended impact velocity.

Steve, the owner, is very helpful if you call him. Will work with you on load development, they can be a bit tricky, so everyone should pay attention and not just assume regular load data is a good start. I would alway recommend asking Hammer for their recommended starting load data.

They are exceptional bullets and you can get some incredible speed out of them.

Any results using a Hammer on Cape Buffalo?

The Speer Grand Slam was available in that weight. I think it is too much of a “compromise” weight. IMO, for buffalo, you want the additional weight of 300+ gr. Antelopes, if you can’t do it with a 270gr, 15gr won’t give you much of an advantage.

I like that bullet. I still have quite a few. Pity that it went away.

I bought a couple boxes of the LRX with the idea of developing a plains game load good for longer distances. Now you’ve got me looking at my LRXs in a whole new light: low-velocity/low recoil short range loads. Don’t think I’ll do it though- for sure I’ll end up using it on a kudu at 325 yards

Want to trade some LRX for 300 grain TSX ?

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
