I contacted Accurate about 450 loads data

has the title says and the answer was
using Accurate 4350
with a 550 gr. bullet
starting load 82 gr. for 1900
max load 91 gr. for 2100
this out of a 24 inch barrel
to me it seems a bit low charge for this powder
what do you think
at the same time what powder would give me 2100 fps with the 550 gr. bullet and would be slightly compressed in my 450 rigby (22 inch)

I have two powders on my bench that I will be trying to use to do just that, but in a 450 Dakota...IMR 7828 and 7977.

Don't know if either will do exactly what you are looking for, but it would be fun to try!
 
this is what I wanted to do use the enduron 7977 but did not find any load data on it .... so E-mail IMR and a few days later a gentleman call me back and told to use very slow powder such has the 7977 in a almost straight case like the 450 rigby is risky for the reason that there is a chance that the powder could start to ignite at the bottom and pushing the front portion forward and then creating a second detonation... said they had experience a few time in lab
the same powder would be ok in a 338 Lapua because of much more shoulder on the case

That's odd. They have the .470 Nitro on the bottle as one of the cartridges it is great in!

It seems to work fine in .470...in my admittedly limited experience...and the 450 R has a lot more defined shoulder than a .470.

Take a look at H 4350. With a Woodleigh 550 Gr. bullet supposedly you can expect a little over 2200 FPS from a 22" barrel using a max load. At least that is what QuickLoad had to offer.
 
I have found the load with norma mrp powder that duplicate their factory ammo with a 550 gr. bullet
95 gr = 1950 fps and 105 gr = 2100 fps
its slower burning than IMR 4831 and I think the 105 gr loading should be 100% load density.....
as for the 7977 powder I would love to try it but......
if any one tries it let me know....
 
1 data point for IMR 7977 in the 450 Dakota (essentially the same case capacity as the 450 Rigby, per Pierre van der Walt).

On my inaugural range trip with my new 450 Dakota, I took some ammo loaded with a "starting load" of IMR 7977, which turns out to be nearly a case full! Starting load is in quotes as I pulled this load out of thin air (not recommended!) as loading data for 7977 in the Dakota is non-existent.

97.5 gr is almost a compressed load with that long 500gr TSX...and yet it only yielded an average of 1,831 fps with the 500gr bullet.

I am going to load some at 100gr for the next outing, to get the velocity and recoil up to where it is a more meaningful practice round. I will also play with powders from Varget to IMR 4831 to develop some data.

A 550gr lead-core bullet won't be any more intrusive to powder space, but I wonder if one could get enough 7977 in the Dakota or Rigby to make 2,100 fps? I am thinking maybe not?
 
Tarbe, QuickLoad says 2307 FPS with 99 Gr. H4350 pushing the 500 Gr TSX out of a 22" barrel. All info is for your 450 Dakota. This is a slightly compressed load but still below max pressure. However not by much.

Tarbe as much as you reload, I think you should consider purchasing QuickLoad. It isn't all that expensive and relatively easy to use.

Thanks for the above - it confirms what I was surmising. I figured 90gr would make a plenty stout but conservative practice load.
 
102 grains of H4350 with North Fork 550 gr gets me 2257 fps at 73 degrees F but my barrel is only 19 inches on my 450 Dakota. Waiting for it to get hot again in Phoenix and see how it does.
 
Also, I cut an 18" piece of PVC and drilled it to fit for a long drop tube. H4831 is about as slow as I would go on powder, I don't think you can get enough of the real slow powders in there without massive compression.
 
Have you had the chance to look at the Real Guns website, they have some date for the 450 Rigby listed which is esentialy the same.. You could also take a starting load for the 460 Weatherby and work you way up.

How can Quickload say that 99 gr. of H4350 is a slightly compressed load ..... I have some H4350 and tried it in my 450 Rigby and at 99 gr. its about a 1/4 inche below the shoulder and at 110 is about 1/8 below the shoulder
am I missing something here
115 gr is at the bottom of the neck
 
It considers the volume of the empty case minus the volume of the bullet when seated to its' normal depth. It also converts powder weight to volume based on data provided by the manufacturer and then compares the volume of fill to the available capacity.
