I blame Bob N 35 whelen

My 9x57 will have to suffice for now

Beautiful rifle. Appropriately stocked as well. I get sick of seeing lightweight prone stocks with 90 degree pitch being presented as hunting stocks. You can practice to lean forward into such a stock BUT it rarely seems to take when the shooter takes a snap shot at game.

Many thanks. I found a couple of Mauser Sporter stocks online and took a chance on them. This one isn’t a perfect fit for my 9x57, but it’s close enough.

To get us back on .35 Whelens… this is my Mauser Sporter in .35 Whelen. It weighs nothing so you can walk all day with it. Full power loads it will get your attention. I added a spacer and a kick ease pad, and that corrects the length of pull, making recoil manageable.

@Zinz
Ed Z, depends on what you call full power loads
Factory loads anaemic
Remington superformance loads getting there
Handloads pushing 225-250 grains at 2,900-2,700 fps will get your attention .
A 310grainer at over 2,400fps gets your attention.

yes... that ^

It's a light-for-caliber rifle (I'll dig it out of the safe and weigh it). It gets lively with full-house loads.

Many thanks. Sometimes I think I get more comments about my redwood burl table than anything else! It is a beautiful thing... I can thank my dad for that one. He brought the unfinished pieces home from a family vacation to the western states back in the 70s. He sanded and applied the epoxy resin on the back porch. I've treasured it for many decades.

Not sure how refined my tastes are, but I certainly appreciate craftmanship. Pre-war Mauser sporters, old cars, handmade knives. If it has a piece of figured wood, I'll be admiring it.

Ed Z
I have one also, brought back by my dad, it was the first burl table that we made and was for my mom. Dad and I made several afterwards, maple, redwood and myrtle wood mostly. Mom and dad are gone and it now resides with me, found memories making it, it is due for a refinishing.

What load should I run in a .243 using 95gn Nosler BT?

Because you get to experiment with different 35 cal and some are in different rifles that the 35w does not fit in .
356 in a 94 Winchester
350L in a ar15
The 358w in the short action blr
The 350 rem mag because most people don’t know what it is and the little rem carbines are neat little rifles
The 35 wcf because who doesn’t needed a 1895 Winchester
And what’s the best way to compare them. To the 35w but to shoot game with both for a hands on comparison?

And the 350l you might need a light kicking 35 for a kid to use.

Well that’s the reason I could come up with

@Flbt
Why spoil a good thing by getting another 35.
The Whelen when loaded properly will do just fine.
The grand tower of power that has no fear in hunting.
Bob

I feel as if I may have joined a cult. 35 whelen is the cartridge that will not only basically make you a better marksmen but improve looks, intelligence, sexual stamina.
I missed out on the first round of Lipsey’s Ruger African and regretted it and swore if they reissued I would have one, well any under 2000.00. Browsing GB several new ones have pooped up.
I browsed all of them and hot damn one ending on 6 hours and in Duncan, OK. I live in OKC so threw a bid and figured no way I would get it since after the initial allocation they were bringing big money. You know where this is going, I won…wooo hoooo $1500 rough all in.
I am retired so figured I would drive down and pick up so no damage in shipping. Lay eyes on the mythical beast that alluded me the first time. Huge let down, plain as she could be. Kinda like getting a blind date with one of five sisters in my home town. All were drop dead gorgeous, except the one. You guessed it that one came home with me.
1.5 hour drive home with plain Jane in back seat, also had to have the Bog death grip bipod. Now roughly 1850 on the most gawd awful 2x6 piece of furniture and sticky bolt imaginable. One of the other members here mentioned length of pull is a little off so finger on trigger also off.
Return trip home almost made it past the Casinos on I-44,almost, $3850 and still not home yet. During drive decided this piece of engineering excellence is a costly SOB and going to be a retro rifle for me.
Cheap, came with one inch rings so my extra Swarovski 5i’s or Leupold’s with illumination will not fit. Leupold VariX 3 3.5 10x40 from back of gun safe it is. LOP will be addressed with a cheap Tourbon leather lace up stock cover. 4 boxes of 2 different ammo from Optic Planet. $4000 and counting with free scope and rings.
Thanks! BobNelson35whelen, never listen to people from down under, they live their entire lives upside down and have been known to eat vegamite.
Hopefully range time next week, she best be a shooter or the classifieds will get a new listing.
:-) thanks Bob!
No idea if they still do it. But it used to be you could call customer service at Ruger and sendvin your 1 inch rings to trade for 30mm ones;)

Just weighed it… about 6 1/2 pounds with the sling attached.

I wouldn't like to be touching that off with a 250grainer leaving the muzzle at 2,700fps. Unless it fit you properly she would be rather lively to say the least.
Bob

@CBH Australia
You shouldn't be using a 243 period
I did load some 95gn ballistic tips for a mate and they were an abject failure. You never knew if they were going to just pencil thru, blow up or work as intended.
We switched to 95gn SST and he never looked back

Don't forget the Whelen/Brown, 9x56ms and 9x57

Works good for coyotes and prairie dogs, but then so does the fact 22s and 25s.

Some times as we Australians say BOB 35 W is full of shit, who could not love a 243.

ME I HATE THE USELESS HORRIBLE LITTLE OVER HYPED PIECE OF CRAP.
All noise and no use for anything.

My 9x56 with 270 grain round noses out of my MS model 1905 at 6 1/2 lbs will definitely get your attention if you don’t mount and hold her right. Same for my Ruger American 30-06 with 200 or 220 grain full power loads. Both will flatten hogs with authority.

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
