Heym 88B High Demand?

Yes, I’m aware. They had or may still have a used .500 Jeffery double listed a couple of weeks ago for around $65K. It may have sold by now.

A couple of years ago, they had a Phil Cogan & Son engraved .375 Flanged Magnum priced at around $325K. It sat there for quite some time, but I assume it eventually sold.
There’s definitely a space for these top-of-the-line double rifles and shotguns among the higher echelons of the market.

The guns to see there are the ones that never make it online or into the vault.

Buddy they are already there, just spoke to someone tonight that sold an upgraded 88B for 41k. Had some embellishments but not that much more than mine. It comes to a Do you want to wait for new delivery for 2-3yrs or hunt now, if you have the FU money, you can buy it now.. You know how that goes...

$40’s is right where I’d have put this. That’s not a price to sell it tonight, but for someone who wants one and doesn’t want to wait it’ll move. Think about what the dealer offered you, then add 10-20% mark-up because they need to make money. Your rifle is in a much more desirable caliber than the 450NE that was listed.

Recently I have had multiple people and some dealers throwing very high numbers at me for my Heym 88B in .500NE.

Prices have been so high I am considering it. Does anyone know why the sudden high demand for the Heym?

One dealer said there is big price increases and there is a 2-3yr backlog of orders and mainly on the jumbo actions. Also he said there was a rumor that Heym is considering cutting the 88B production and just having the 89B.

I am considering selling mine but does anyone know if there is truth to this??

I just found a 2026 price list after digging and my gun with upgrades is $46,500 landed and they are giving a 5% swing with tarrifs or exchange rate. And 2-3yr is definitely real.

I have had 2 dealers offer me in the low 30'sk range.. I guess if someone wants one now then they just don't worry about $$

I had to dig through AI and it was a converted rate in euros. I will see if I can find it again. I found it through GoogAI and it pulled it from a dealer in Europe.

A Heym simply won’t have the finesse, handling, or provenance of a pre-war British double. That’s where the old British guns really stand apart. They may need a little more love and care, but hunting with a piece from that bygone era gives you something back that money simply can’t buy.

I would tend to agree with some English guns but they definitely are not all created equal. For me the nostalgia would be with a Holland, Purdey, WR, Wm. Evans but only in the true big bores. Problem is whats available are all the obsolete cartridges that are difficult to find. I will say I have had a hiatus from shooting due to shoulder surgeries, but generally I should my big bores and double alot. The last thing I need is to be on a hunt with the nostalgia gun and have it fail, leaving me to borrow a gun on a big hunt in the Selous.

I do like the looks and feel of the 89b and older English doubles but I really love the Heym

As I buy a lot in the UK, I budget .60 on the dollar to cover 34% exchange rate, 10% tarrif, 3% duty, and tax and export costs and any other incidentals. And you are correct, ordering the Rigby, you are going to add options because who will order a double like that with zero engraving, zero, options or nice wood. So realistically they are 100k.... I would venture to say 2-3yr wait.

You're basically right, although they do come with basic engraving and the base wood is actually quite nice. But I tend to favor more simple, understated wood. I love the wood on my 404 Rigby PH model and it has no figure at all, just nice straight grain.

I added engraving on the stock oval. They've also now added a "middle" option for standard engraving. It's lovely and I'm sure will help add margin.

I am an OEM in a very different world and its super hard selling stuff when you have lead times as long as they do because you don't know what's going to happen to your costs during that period. We got pretty caught out during covid.

I understand your perspective and do agree that this comes down to a personal choice. A new 89B is a excellent piece of work so is the 88B. They are just NOT in the same class as a true pre war British double by H&H, Rigby, Purdey Boss and Lang. It may be like finding a needle in a Haystack to find a good one but they are out there and then have a inspection by JJ/Ken Owen or a no. of Double rifle specialists and I doubt you will be stuck while hunting in Africa.

The probable drawback is suitable ammo. to use but there are many in this forum that have been using Hornady DGS/X and other ammo's without issues..

Still a few days to go on these 2 Heyms at Murphy Auctions. That should give you a bit of an idea - albeit + buyers premium and tax to factor in.
