Hunted
South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Canada,
I am primarily going to Limpopo for night critters. I will hunt a couple days of Klipspringer and Duiker. I am flying Delta in the bulkhead. I have a carry-on and a small camera backpack and my wife has a carry-on and a small camera backpack. We are using the PHs rifles because of night vision and he is setup for this and I am not.

So, my question is whether to check the carry-on bags since I am in the bulkhead (Comfort +) or to try to get all in the overhead. I prefer not to check anything.

It is getting close. I am having a hard time working, sleeping, and doing anything other than dreaming about the hunt. I am dreaming of hyena, klipspringers, duikers, sharps, honey badgers, servals, civets, caracals, mongoose, genets, jackals, warthogs, etc.

I am packed and ready to go!

Traveling over and back a week ago on the DL200 and 201 flights, I had a checked suitcase, a backpack and a carry-on. I left stuff for my PH's and came home with just the backpack and my carry-on, I was in the row behind the bulkhead seats in dis-Comfort Plus. There was plenty of overhead space (the spaces for overhead storage for the bulkhead seats was marked for the Comfort-Plus passengers. Didn't seem to be an issue. Shouldn't be a problem.

Have a great trip! Eastern Cape we had several mornings with frost, highs at worst were close to 70 degrees one or two days. The weather felt great. Hope you have the same.

You have preferred seating.. do you also have preferred boarding?

We flew a combo of Qatar, BA, and American flights to and from SA on our recent trip.. all seats on every flight were bulkhead (which was WONDERFUL!).. we were also priority boarding group 2 on all flights.. so, we had zero issues getting everything into the overhead compartments..

That said, all 4 of our flights (2 each direction) were completely full.. had we been in any boarding group after say #4, I think it might have been a challenge to get everything in the overheads... (we each had 1 carry on and 1 "personal" (laptop sized backpack) bag... there were 3 of us traveling as a family)..

Perfect. I am flying delta.

@Justbryan , Comfort Plus was preferred boarding, no issue getting your bags into the closest overhead. And those flights to and from Johannesburg were completely full from what I could tell.

Our flight is full. Thanks. Not worried now, just I have never sit in the bulkhead. Thanks for the feedback and confirmation.

Look forward to reading your hunt report, best of luck on your hunts, I wish I was still there, envious of you (except for the flying portion)!

You might consider taking a bag for the flight home to fill with souvenirs. I bring stuff home for my kids and in laws-I always check that
One.
I keep my carry on with toiletries and spare change of clothes amongst other necessities

Awesome. What outfit are you hunting with?

This will be a cool trip!
Please take your carry on with you. Comfort+ comes with priority boarding and dedicated overhead bin space. Do not check it.

Warning: the Comfort+ bulkhead aisle seat on the window side (30C & G) are very bad. These used to be my go to seats but now with the reconfiguration of Pre I'm Select the aisle diverts sharply and carts can not get past the IFE screen for these seats. I was miserable getting hit and then having to move my screen for the flight attendants to pass On the way to RSA/Namibia in June. I upgraded on the way home. Next week we are sitting in PS.

When I go to Africa, or anywhere for that matter, 90% of the clothes I need, go with me on the plane in a backpack. 3 times my checked arrived days later. Coming home that doesn’t matter, but going over it sure does.

I pack one set of hunting clothes in my carry on and wear another set on the plane along with my boots then put another set in my checked bag so if it gets lost I still have clothes to wear. also do take something for purchases to bring home or you will wish you did (I know)

Just carry on your pack and have a great time. The night hunts are a special time to be out in the bush, it will be chilly so make sure you have a few layers to wear. Have a great trip.

Most of my hunts are solo — just me, my rifle, and a good map. Sometimes I tag along with an old buddy for a week in Zimbabwe or South Africa, but more often than not, it’s just me.
Big fan of classic hunting — bolt-action rifles, old-school tracking, and taking the time to really be in the moment.
Just did a podcast, check it out if interested!
