I want to share a poor experience I had with guns.com with everyone. On November 28th I ordered the below .338 Sako from guns.com. The post only included the two photos below, but the listing included "certified used" and "used/very good" designations. Guns.com claims that if a rifle is certified used their gunsmiths have put the gun through some kind of 10 point inspection, and used/very good apparently means "normal wear".

When the rifle arrived the front site was falling off, and there were several dime sized chunks taken out of the laminate stock. When I say chunks, I don't mean "indentations" or "scratches", one hole nearly penetrated the entire stock.

I immediately exercised their "no questions asked return policy" which only applies to their certified used guns. I returned the rifle in mid December, and they reposted it for sale on December 29th. I just received my refund today almost 45 days after it was returned, not a huge deal, but a little bit vexing. They also charged me a $310 restocking fee, which pissed me off. The restocking fee is clearly stated in their return policy, while annoying I suppose this is fair. But now the truly disturbing part: https://www.guns.com/used-guns/p/sako-85-l?i=534073 if you look at that link they are using the same vague photos, and the description of the gun "certified used" and "used/very good". To me this posting of that rifle is misleading, that gun is not in "very good" condition. I've bought at least a dozen used rifles over the years, and that .338 arrived in by far the worst condition of any of them.

Lessons learned, for me at least, I would never consider buying a used gun from Guns.com without receiving more than their typical stock photos. I would also never buy a gun that didn't carry the certified used designation as it carries with it a no questions asked return policy.

Conjecture: It seems to me that they list these guns with misleading photos, and a return policy that ensures they make a profit even if the gun is returned.

That’s unfortunate. I appreciate you sharing your experience so others don’t suffer the same.

Hope you are able to find the rifle you are looking for in much better condition. Cheers.

As a matter of fact I did order a similar rifle from another seller.

Any pictures of the gun you received?
Unfortunately not, I didn't take any as their "no questions asked" return policy did not require them. The largest chunk is about midway down the ejection port, roughly the diameter of a dime, and it penetrated more than 90% of the stock. If you zoom in on the photo you can just barely see it, circled in red below.

That is really bad behavior. Very disappointing. Thank you for taking time to send out a heads-up.
Yes, anyone with common sense would have taken detailed photos of the chunks taken out of the stock when selling that rifle; they were not mere scratches. I would have chalked it up to a simple mistake if they hadn't reposted the rifle with the exact same photos and description. The second post is both misleading, and to me an indication of their business practices.

Thanks for sharing. Bad deal, "certified used" "used/very good" is misleading. Restock fee high. Covers their butt.

With that high of a restocking fee it may detour most purchasers from doing a return.

I have learned that when buying something in a used condition to expect the worse no matter what the seller says, what is minor to me is major to you.

On firearms for some reason I have seen a few that I would like to of purchased but I want to handle them before money changes hands. Then if there is a problem we can work it out.

I tried to buy a shotgun on there and got the biggest run around and the stupidest sales people on the earth .I bought another one off of gunsinternational from a sporting goods store .

This is proof that it’s always best to visit Toby’s Kitchen Counter Emporium before making a purchase elsewhere. lol! Kidding.
But I have been screwed a couple of times on used guns myself. But for the most part my experiences have been positive.
I ordered a gun from Guns.com once and received a totally different gun and caliber altogether. But they promptly sent a return label and charged me zero to rectify the situation. So in that case they were very good about fixing the problem. Sorry to hear your experience was different.

I have never used guns.com. I'm not sure I knew they existed.

I have bought a couple on GunsInternational - never an issue.

I have bought a bunch on GunBroker, and usually used. Without fail they have been better than the site photos.

Sorry to read about your experience, and just WOW on that restocking fee. Some of the rifles I have picked up on GB had a purchase price less than that. :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for the post and sorry to hear about your experience. They had a nice Beretta competition shotgun listed a bit ago that I thought about.

Ended up deciding against it as I could see it was not in as good condition as they described. There are fewer and fewer dealers I will buy from these days unfortunately.

I bought a Ruger No3 in 223 last year from Guns.com. The price was decent, the rifle was better than advertised. Shipping was prompt. Worked out good for me.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but you're not the first nor will you be the last to go through this. I've had several friends / acquaintances have similar problems like you did. Based on their experiences I'd never buy anything from them regardless of what the "deal is". Piss poor customer support !!!!

I've bought two rifles from them (Whitworth 375, Ruger No 1 375) and both were near new, with no hitches and decent prices. Due diligence is always worthwhile though.

Hate to hear you had a bad experience with guns.com. Last June I bought a rifle from them described as "very good" not "certified" and, as you say, poor pictures. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised at the condition as it was 95-98%.

Isn’t Guns.com just a listing service for stores. Who is the store that physically held and sold it.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
