George Rushby

[Certus]

Had to give a lift to a fellow at work today. He had a Nyati tattoo so asked him about it.
Turns out his grandad was George Rushby. Haven’t heard of this chap so looked him up. Anyone read the books? Thinking of getting them to read next.

Cheers.

now that’s an awesome coincidence to run into him!

I’ve got his book No more the Tusker - my favourite African hunting book.
George Rushby also hunted the njombe maneaters who killed around 1500 people.

In my view ' No more the Tusker '....remains in my top 3 of books ever written on Africa/Hunting.
He was as tough as a man can get.....in similar vein to Ian Nyschens.
Great respect to both of them......

I have always wanted to know what make of 9.3mm double rifle Rushby used on some of the lions and then was forced to sell. He wrote so highly of it. Going to have to give that book another read.

"No more the Tusker" is great but i would also recommend the book "The Hunter is Death" by T. V. Bulpin.
It's a well written biography of George Rushby - stories about his life as an ivory hunter in the Lado Enclave and the Congo, encounters with cannibal tribes and the famous Njombe man-eating Lions.

Tony Sanchez-Arino knew Rushby well and wrote a chapter about him in "Elephant Hunters, Men of Legend".
