I figured this would be a fun one…

So I’m going on my third hunt in Africa in September 2026 with my parents along with several extended family members. I decided to use this opportunity to challenge myself in a new way.

I live in a neighborhood where, for some unknown reason, people throw away amazingly good things. Furniture, smokers, vacuum, cleaners… you name it, and they will throw it away, often brand new. I do a lot of western big game hunting in America, so I stay in shape by running the neighborhood, often finding these items and sprinting home to get a truck so that I can pick them up. I have decided to collect these items and sell them to pay for my trophy fees.

We won the package in a raffle (no, I’m not interested in the debates on raffle safaris; I understand that they are a crapshoot), and it came with a nyala, a bushbuck, and an impala. The rules of self-imposed challenge are that the trophy fees fee for extra animals must come from selling items on Facebook Marketplace, specifically items that I did not pay anything for. So, if I do amazing and make $9k, a buffalo is in my future; if I flop with only a $1500, I’ll be lucky to take home an extra wildebeest.

I started collecting items this weekend (I already had a few sitting around that we were not using), and I’m already up to $310. Other items I have already listed include a working treadmill, a Ridgid propane heater, a nightstand, a wakeboard, and much more! Unfortunately, I am having to fight my wife who does not want to sell the like new Bob stroller I found today, but I will let her keep that one

I figured this would be a fun place to track the progress every month or so, then give a full update after the hunt. Also, I think it proves 1.) that Americans throw away far too much stuff, and 2.) that anyone can afford a safari with a little financial planning.

Happy hunting, all!

You can tell your wife you will use the Bob stroller as a gun caddy at the range. Make your kid walk, will toughen him/her up for their first safari!
Honestly, I hate our running stroller, so I’m fine with keeping this one.

Great plan and initiative! Better than my plan of thowing loose change in a 5 gallon glass bottle.
It’s more just for fun. Would be great if I can *feel* like I get a handful of free animals (or a buff). Plus then, I can use the money that I would’ve spent on that for a moose hunt or something fun.

Very creative idea. I'm hoping you get a buffalo out of it!

Nice mental idea. However, Bad advise @ET1775. @csmcclain could be looking at his hospital bill when he awakes from his coma caused by a freak accident, that's according to his wife's statement in the police report, instead of the self induced coma when he sees his safari bill.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I applaud your ingenuity. This is a great plan! It will take time but with some effort you will surely make enough to add some nice animals.

That's a great idea,
I've done similar with things I've hauled home from work.
I used marketplace extensively cleaning up my late uncle's property. Some things I thought were complete junk. Lol
I've had guys drive up to 5 hours to buy things.
Hardest part was avoiding scammers.

Great idea. I applaud your efforts and am looking forward to tracking the progress. Maybe a graphic or two? Like those capital campaigns at church. You could should the buffalo at the top and the other animals along the pipe!

Personally, I no longer do garage sales or sell stuff on market place. My personality is not sufficiently patient to deal with people wanting to pay 5 cents on the dollar for something I have listed for 10 cents on the dollar. So, our local charities get our stuff.

Just a thought I’ve had a lot more success with the app Offer Up than Facebook Marketplace. Fewer tire kickers and I get better prices.

Fun project though.

Where is this magical neighborhood where high dollar goods are tossed to the curb??

I live in the nexus of three trailer parks and a dirt-track speedway. There’s a greater chance of finding a bag of crack and a corpse during a jog around the block than a $600 stroller.

Great idea, hope you get enough for that buffalo.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
