speaking of GB, I effed up big time a couple days ago. They had a TC Encore in 280 Rem. Auction price started at 450, "buy now" was 475. I participated in the auction. Like a total effing idiot. And some dude did the "buy now".:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Yes, .366. It could be transformed into a 416 Taylor, but would require reworking the feed rails and opening up the bolt face. It would be WAY better to start with a magnum rifle for that.
Toby,
The ,416 Taylor is the same length as the.458 WM (parent case), with a .532 diameter base. Should work in any .30-06 length action on up? Heavier action of course would be preferable. I haven’t looked at the cartridge base diameter of the 9.3?

Yeah I did that before to on GB for $25.00! Never again!

That's only the 2nd auction I've ever done there. Every other gun I've bought there has been a "buy now." No idea why I nutted up on this one. 28" fluted barrel in a 280 Rem. I'll be kicking myself in the ass for the next 30 years over missing that one.

Don’t beat yourself over that! I procrastinated over a 1979 Ruger M77 RSM .458 WM with a 4x Leupold scope for $600.00 at a local gun shop awhile back. It needed to be reblued as it had some exterior rust and minor pitting. But somebody else bought it. I’ve learned that if you wait long enough ( sometimes not very long) another rifle that you really want will be available. BTW, I personally like the longer barrels in my non DG hunting rifles. My Browning A Bolt .338 WM has a 26” barrel which I love. Keep the faith!

Truth be told, I'd rather a 275 Rigby. But my motive is actually for my daughter. I bought a cheap NEF in 7mm-08 for her to test the waters. So far, she's enjoying shooting it. She broke her leg last year just before deer season. If I'd have gotten that 280, it would have been for me, but I'd have upgraded her to 280 Rem, probably a MRC. Easy to justify the expense for me when reloading for 2 rifles in the same caliber.

The good deals go quick and these days there are a few good deals on the sites. I recently stumbled onto a good deal in your favorite caliber, the .280 Rem. Had been looking off and on for a Remington 725 in any caliber over 6mm and found one on Guns International in .280 in very good original condition for $499 shipped! Missed out on more than a few myself over the years.

7mm-08 is an excellent, flat shooting, low recoil caliber! Put plentiful and inexpensive .308 cases in the .7mm-08 dies and you have a reasonably inexpensive reloaded hunting cartridge!

For kids, I think you’re right in target.

257 Roberts
6.5x55
260 rem
7-08
7x57
280 rem
280 ai
7x64

The last two are “forever” guns that can kill anything non-dangerous on the planet amply. All of these in a “Normal weight” rifle have less than 20lbs of felt recoil. The 7x57 has 14lbs, the 6.5x55 has 12lbs, the 257 has 10lbs.

My son is 8.5 years old, 85lbs, and with practice, can handle the 7x64 if that provides any benchmark for you.

The base diameter of the 9.3x62 is .468, whereas the 416 Taylor is .532. So you would have to open up the bolt face. And since the cartridge diameter is much larger on the 416 Taylor, you'd most likely have to open up the feed rails, and feed ramp as well.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
