So I have seen this mentioned on here a few times buried in threads or when people bring up tick bites.

But I wanted to start a thread to ask and get a feel for how many people are actually using this on hunts.

I am a fairly religious user of permethrin on all my clothing items, hats, boots, etc. I have found this to be the best bug and tick control measure I have found yet. One of the areas I regularly like to hunt is absolutely covered in deer ticks which increases the odds of Lyme's greatly. So I am always on the lookout for effective measures.

So, how many of you guys are using this on your hunts, and what have been your thoughts on it?

The only place that I ever have had an issue with ticks is South Africa. I have never had to deal with them in multiple trips to Namibia, Mozambique or my one experience in Zambia. I have been around a lot of mosquitoes in the Caprivi and the Zambezi Delta, but that is effectively addressed with a malaria prophylaxis. Tsetse flies, which are the devil's spawn, are another issue - but they do indicate you are in both wild country and where the buffalo roam.

I have never soaked clothing in permethrin. In South Africa, I do spray my exposed skin with a repellent. Nothing much works for Tsetse Flies.

I hate Testse flies with a passion!!!!! Truly they keep me out of Tanzania and Zambia. It does not take but once to be around them and my thought was a smaller horse fly multiplied by hundreds of them

I know a guy that puts flea and tick collars on there boots.
They say since they started have never had a tick on them.

I have used the spray that’s for tents and clothes but you were supposed to treat them and let it dry.
Where I was at o was more concerned with the bugs than possible harm from using the spray wrong. I was bacilly using it as you would ( deep woods off) except not on skin.

Well I have not used that in Africa, but years ago on some backpacking trips, it was useful.

In Africa, I treat everything except underwear with Permethrin and use picaridin spray on my exposed skin and have had zero problems.

I understand, some folks use a mixture of sunscreen and 100% deet for the tsetse flies.

I’ve used 100% deet in Alaska and it did not stop the mosquitoes.

I’ve never considered it. I haven’t seen a need. Locally I treat all my hunting and outdoors clothes with permethrin for ticks. In Africa I’ve only seen South Africa have bad ticks. Areas that burn every year generally don’t have a tick problem. Thankfully deer ticks need to be attached something more than 24 hours to effectively transfer Lyme disease. I just check thoroughly every night. If I get a rash I’ll go to doctor for doxycycline immediately. I think knowing signs is a lot better plan than washing with flea and tick shampoo. I wouldn’t want to douse myself with insecticide very often. I don’t think can be safe long term.

I know of a few guys here in South Africa that use dog tick and flea shampoo to shower with and wash there clothes in, they say it works.... i havent tried it.

Treating ALL clothing with permethrin has worked for me. Adding deet if needed should take care of it.

I worry more about ticks at my deer hunting property than I do South Africa…

I do treat all of my bother other than underwear with permethrin when traveling to RSA… but that’s about it..

I use permethrin and also douse myself pretty heavily in off repellent when walking the E TX woods… and still manage to pick up 4-6 ticks a year, every year… they are genuinely bad in the area that I primarily hunt…

We have plenty of ticks here in WY, 2 years ago I got tick fever, sick for a month , lost 10 pounds and I only weigh 155 lbs. Now I spray my shoes and pants with permethrin and have very little trouble with ticks.

I treat my safari clothes with Premethrin and bring along Picaridin spray for the biters. We leave for Tokoloshe in five days. I used spray this time vs. immersion in the bucket. Let them hang dry for a couple days, then once through the washer, no soap and dryer then into the bags. We didn't have any issues in Zimbabwe nor Mozambique on our previous two safaris.

I use Permethrin spray on clothing before the trip. I use whatever spray they have in the bakkie and Avon for general sunscreen/bug repellent. I do not use the pet shampoo or flea collars. That process has worked well for me in Africa.

That is not good enough for mosquitoes and no see-ums in Canada or Alaska. Even 100% Deet is not good enough in those areas. Up there I use a combination of heavy Deet and Thermacells.

Permithium is the ticket. I know it works, here in Florida chiggers are a real pest. If I go to my lease without permethrin clothes I find out a few days later how well permethrin works, like right now, itch, itch

Chiggers are the devil's spawn trying to keep you indoors!

Run a bath just deep and warm enough to sit in and add a cap full(3/4oz) of bleach and sit in the bath for 5min and then shower normally.

When I started treating my clothes with Sawyers permethrin it was a game changer on the ticks and reduced my bites to nearly non existent.

Before I discovered permethrin I used to keep a 2oz travel bottle filled with flea and tick shampoo in my tackle box, hunting pack as well as the 1qt ziplock bag for my airline travel when going to wild places.

Permethrin. I buy the concentrate and dilute it in a pump sprayer for all our clothes before a hunting trip. This has proven results as others we’ve been with have found ticks on them at the end of a day.

An ounce of prevention…
