Well I have finally purchased my first double rifle, a practical caliber. 9.3x74R. A shop had a deal on the discontinued Ugex Chapius doubles. It is a single trigger, the only disappointment on the deal, but the price was circa 40% off new and I figured I could live with a single trigger for the price.

Also as the 9.3 wont really be a dg rifle the traditionality of the double trigger, for me, is not quite as important. Should be good for pigs in heavy country etc.

I have always wanted two doubles, one in this caliber for more practicality and a down the track a .500 NE. The .500 NE will need to be two triggers and tick the "traditional" box.

Paid the deposit be a month or two before I have it in my hands.

I picked it up today she’s a beauty, I’ll upload pics of it later but I have one of the regulation target I’ll load now, hoping I can get close to that accuracy.

I Put her together very happy with how it comes to the shoulder. Cleaned the bores, barrels cleaned up nicely. It does have a cracked/broke rear site insert so I will need to chase a new one up....shouldn't be a big issue.

I did not it is quite stiff and was stiff to put together etc.

Anyone know how to remove and replace that part ?

Wrapt with it !!

Cheers pc3

Funnily enough, I also just bought my first double. Likewise a chapuis 9.3x74r on a progress action (sidelock double triggers).

Mine was very stiff to open/close but especially cock so I wrote to Chapuis to check best practice and confirm. Email attached but the short of it is: break it in by opening, dryfiring and closing it to your hearts content.

Yours,

Congratulations, and in a calibre I'm considering myself. Can I ask what your gun weighs and how you found the recoil?

Interesting I purchased some azooms but on the basis of this email I think I won’t use them.

FYI Folks:

Thanks for the message

I confirm: do not use snap caps on our guns. Chapuis double rifles/shotguns use a rebounding firing-pin/striker system. Repeated impacts against a hard snap cap (especially metal or very stiff plastic types) can stress or deform the rebounding mechanism and the striker tip over time.

Dry-firing is acceptable for your Chapuis

I hope it helps

Thanks

Cool old classic rifle and caliber .Elmer Keith loved double rifles.I only have two double rifle muzzleloaders .I regret not buying a beautiful double 405 winchester in a fitted oak csse for $3600 .

Loaded up some 286gr RNSP Woodleigh's with 62gr and 63gr of AR2209, only had a little time (needed to drop in and see my mother), range was 51 yards from target, the 63 gr load shows some promise.

Eyes are not what they used to be and the bead covers the target.

Had a couple of the test loads left and went to grab a bit of meat for the pooch. Made a hit at around 55-65 yards with the irons pretty well right were I aimed, I used one of the left over 62 gr loads. The 9.3x74r hits hard, the 286gr RNSP's do some damage.

Also tried a shot off hand at a hare and missed...range about 60-65 yards.

Pic of the Chapuis in the bush along with the targets. All in all a rewarding day and I really like doubles, this one is light and handy and hits hard.

Going to add a nice leather sling and leather stock pack to hold a couple of rounds.

That's a great first start and a nice looking rifle. Will you be putting any optics on it?

I have been considering buying a 9.3x74R as well. At one point I saw a few on the Cabelas website for about $3k, but I haven't been able to find a deal like that in a while. What does a good one really run these days?

Photo tax of my Chapuis attached

I'll let pc3 answer the question on price, as mine was a belated 5 year anniversary present from my wife (glory be upon her)

Brief asside but I'm really chuffed with this bullet slide - commissioned it to spec (spacing, belt loop, leather, embossing, callibre etc) last wednesday and it arrived today. 10/10 so i'm rushing to recommend it to any and everyone. And a third the price of Els
