Field Bar

Well done!

Wonderful work. As others have said you’ll see the blemishes more clearly than anyone else.

Would love some close ups of the inside to see how you affixed the dividers.

Thanks. The dividers are free floating. Not affixed to the box. This allows me to change the layout if I need to. More pics to come.

Very nice work! Making one of those would be fun but I don't drink the hard stuff so it would only be a decoration.

Something more functional for me is this oak range box I made a few years back. The design came right out of my head. Some measurements were calculated on paper but nothing was drafted. What's most amazing is I got it right on first attempt. I seem to have a problem marking measurements on wood. It's a numbers thing with me. Can't even remember my own phone number. The partitions are removable and I have an extra set for 20 gauge ... if I ever get a twenty gauge. :D Or I can use it with only one partition for earmuffs and rifle ammo for that range. The handle was salvaged from a piece of crap luggage I bought at Salvation Army Store for a few bucks. Gun oil is in the eyedrop bottle and Hoppies in the trial Listerine bottle (the ONLY container I have yet found that will not leak with that stuff, including the bottle Hoppies puts it in!). Making and fitting the locks for lid and drawer required some serious thinking outside the box (pun intended). Took better part of a week to finish the project. One time I forgot it on top of my Jimmy and drove off from the clays course for our meeting at the pub. It fell off on the highway and one of the fellas picked it up for me. Knocked a small piece of wood from one corner and that's it. I understand it took quite a roll down the road.

Yes, the 12 gauge ammo boxes are upside down. These are for reloads and I write my name on the tops so someone doesn't "accidentally" pick up the wrong box. I'm willing to share my woodworking and rifle building expertise and tips ... but not my name!

The drawer is spring loaded so it pops open when latch is released.

Nice work!

I’ve wanted a field bar for quite a while, but got cold feet when I learned how expensive the store bought versions are. More on this in a minute.

So, I decided to build my own. Here in Missouri, the most common fine wood is American Walnut. It grows abundantly in and is easily sourced at any good mill. I like the contrast between dark brown walnut and yellow wood of Hard Maple, so I used maple for the dividers.

It turned out not bad I think. I’ve spent enough time working on it that I know all of the flaws and defects. I could put more time into it to get it to the next level, but at some point good enough is good enough.

Oh yeah, now I know why the store bought versions are so expensive. I wouldn’t dream of making one to sell. I figure the next one would be easier and better due to the learning curve. But, I’d starve to death trying to make a living at this. Some pics:

Excellent! It would be a lot to drink all four bottles by yourself. I offer to help!

Very, very cool. Great work.

I have a very close friend who makes beautiful furniture, and it is a talent and skillset I’ve always deeply admired. I might bug him for something similar…

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew
