Elephant with a bow?

Lucask< interesting information - where did you get these details? I have Howard Hills book “Hunting the Hard Way” and the was a last minute addendum made just before publication to acknowledge his Elephant - apparently it was

Howard Hill stories have a tendency to get out of control, because he accomplished a lot. I became interested and wanted to separate what was real from all the rest. There are several articles and letters from the period just after he went on safari, and there are a couple of biographies written about his life after the fact. His great nephew is still alive and had a lot of material as well. He wanted to be the first modern man to kill an elephant with a bow he went so far as to test his equipment on a recently dead asian elephant in a zoo before leaving for Africa.

I remember watching a woman on one of the hunting shows take an elephant with a bow. That was several years ago. Don’t remember which one.

I think I saw the exact same show, she shot it, left it because it was going on dark, found it 500 yards from where she shot it the next morning. She drilled it, and it worked, I personally would not want to do that.

Hank, I could well be wrong. I read this book 40 years ago, as a teen. My dad had it. I read Jack O'Connor's book about "The Rifle" or whatever it was called about the same time. I thought it was the 1890's, and these two guys basically used the equivalent of an old English Warbow. I do distinctly remember one was 200lbs draw and one was 180lbs draw. Next time I go to my parent's house I'll see if Dad still has that book. I've heard of Howard Hill, and I think I actually have a DVD somewhere of "Tembo" and yes, the video is horrible, but it's neat. I think I'd prefer a ballista

There a video on u tube about cape buffalo taken down with one arrow only and grzzly stick 300 grs ..it have walked for 10 /15 mt and going down ...another one one shot on its blade bone dropped on the spot!!Everyones using 70 plund draw weight and 300 grs grizzlystick for a tltal of 1000 grs.

In 1992 a ph in zim claimed which he have never had problem bring down an elephant by 80 lbs draw weight bow ...elephant did never have done over 500 meter before dropping down.Only behind soulder shot was reccommended but we are talking about 33 years ago!!!

A friend just returned from a safari in South Africa. He told me that on the return flight he sat next to guy who claimed to be a PH and also claimed to have successfully hunted elephant with a bow. The guy said that the bow he used had a 100 lb draw. There are several things about this story that make me suspicious. What you folks think? Is this a plausible story or more likely BS? I know that Fred Bear took an elephant, but he was a special case and probably shot everything that was legal in his day.

A 70 pounds draw weight bow can today do same job that a 80 pound one did 30 years ago without a heavy training request by bows with draw weight heavier.

Yip....Ray Bunny when he was still a partner was the opposite a total pleasure to hunt with and sit around a campfire....jb however was a selfcentered, shitshot who had to be the centre of attention....I eventually refused to hunt with him....I would also not sit at the same table as him.....many times he would wound and lose animals but then get them to take another clients animal from the skinning shed to complete the "photo shoot"....could also not leave women alone....especially prostitutes.....never drank a drop......

That story sounds like BS. Yeah, Fred Bear did it decades ago, but it was a legendary shot with custom gear. A 100lb bow just doesn't have the punch to ethically take an elephant by today's standards. Any reputable PH would know it's a terrible idea and most countries probably wouldn't even allow it. Your friend likely met a guy telling tall tales.

An efficient 100 pound bow with the proper weight and constructed arrow and broadhead would kill an elephant quickly. Just as with a bullet if it’s placed in the right part of the body.

Video or multiple eyewitnesses? If not, it is BS.

Elephant are very often killed within 20 yards with a rifle. and that is easily bow range.
An efficient bow with a properly set up arrow and Broadhead easily penetrates an elephant chest
